I'm just fishing here but...
« on: March 19, 2008, 08:44:55 PM »
How many of you getbiggers like to fish?

I love it.. can't get enough of it.  But I've only been serious about it for the last couple years or so.  Mainly bass and crappie.

Please share your thoughts and experiences on the matter.

Flame me for this, or set me straight, but:

I used to fish, but I no longer do.  I would fish if it were necessary for me to do so.  As a sport, absolutely not.  I think driving a hook through a fish's mouth is cruel and painful to the fish.  I admit, I do buy it fresh from local markets, but I don't have to actually see the fish being "drowned" and hooked.  I figure if I can't bait a puppy on a pole, I might as well not do it to a fish.

If it is fact that the fish doesn't experience pain in the sense that we as humans perceive it, then, yea, I'll grab a few beers and sit out on the pier and fish.

Used worms my whole life till about a year ago.  I've set my mind to learn lures, so far with mixed results.  I've got some light tackle for crappie/panfish and a baitcaster for bass now.

I'm not sure how fish experience pain, but they only have about a 3 second memory.  So wait 3 seconds and the fish won't even remember you had a hook in his mouth.

No luck with bass the other day.  I think that pond might have winter killed.  Don't know if you have that as an Aussie.  Think I'll go for crappie tomorrow if I go.  You can't screw up worms and a bobber!

I agree with you.

Of course fish feel pain.  Why wouldn't they?  They have nervous systems just like mammals.

I grew up in Wisconsin where fishing and hunting are king.

hunting/fishing...It's so boring it hurts.

I wish i could more.   Fishing for the most part is crappy in California.  Occasionally i go out on private charters in the delta and fish for sturgeon or bass and have had some great days and have had some where all i've caught is buzz fish.

To my late father's dissappointment, no, I am not.
