How to tell an employee they stink
« on: March 30, 2008, 12:52:02 PM »
I am in charge of the shop at my work...I have a guy who seems to never wash his clothes. Now I am getting complaints from other workers. How is the best way to handle this? I talked to my boss about it and I was told I could not just tell him   " Dude..you smell like burnt ass."  To me that sounds like the quickest easiest way...but have been warned against it. He is a nice guy...but he is also the same scumbag I talked about before who was busted trying to screw a 14 yr old on internet sex sting....so his feelings aren't that important to me, but I still feel kinda awkward having to deal with this in a "professional manner". I prefer just to insult him. ;D

Anyone ever deal with something like this?

That reason alone should be the reason to enact verbal discipline. Who the fuck hired him at your work to begin with?? This guy sounds like someone who should be in jail.

never dealt with anything like this

talk to him in private, tell him you need employees to be fresh and clean, tell him there have been complaints on his hygiene. And you don't want to speak to him about this ever again.

He was already working there when it happened. I don't know why he wasn't let go..probably against the law to fire someone over that...I don't know. He got off with probation. when it happened I was taken in the office and warned that he was not to be harrassed  or discriminated against over this.  :-\   ONLY in America.

You write a letter informing ALL employees that they must make sure they have clean clothes and smell "proper."
This way, you do not alienate anybody in particular, and if any employee asks "what is this for?" you can tell them 'John Smith has smelled like burnt ass way too many times for my liking, and since I can't get him in trouble for attempting to hook up with 14 year olds, I at least need to make sure my workplace doesn't allow him to stink up the place like onions being cooked with garlic!'

"dude you stink and everyone here is annoyed by it.   Here's some soap and deodorant"

He tried to have sex with a 14 year old.  No need to be nice.

I think Youngblood is on the right lines...

I run a company in a country with pretty tight labor laws. When a new situation comes up, I always call my lawyers & ask for their opinion before taking any action.

90% of the time they tell me to go ahead with what I was going to do anyway - but the 10% saved me a lot of potential grief.

  Problem solved.

I had them  fire him.  ;D

No joke. I don't actually have the authority to fire anyone....but my input counts because he works for me and he is employed through a temp agency( he was actually fired back when he got arrested then hired back through the temp service for less money and no benefits hahaha ). He has had attendance issues in the past  and he missed a few days this week so my boss asked me where he was and I said "Who cares?"  :)

He said "You wana just get rid of  him?"  I said "Hell Yeah.." so he is now unemployed.

holy shit, you could have fired him over the pedo deal.  If that were not a factor, I would just say you need to take in aside in private and tell him what's up.  There could be a medical reason for it.  Just be direct and friendly and private about it.

No I don't think there is a  medical reason. I have known him for 5 years. He didn't start smelling like ass until the last few months.

He was hired back after the pedo deal because he is pretty skilled at his job and it isn't something you teach someone over night. At that time we needed him...now we still do but he has missed too much work lately.

All he got for the sex sting arrest was 2 years probation and daily reporting plus 10 byears as a registered sex offender and no internet access for 7 years. He even has a prior arrest for vicodin (felony)

here is his pic straight from the sex offender site.
he even looks like a child molestor.

Well, the only thing I know for sure is that you should take him aside in private.  You would be surprised at the employers that up and feel they need to confront employees right in front of everyone.  When I worked for others the biggest thing I couldn't stand was listening to another employee disciplined in front of everyone...  That's crap and should never be done in my thinking.  I had enough of seeing it, I almost up and ended the stupid fuckhead manager over him laying into others in front of everyone.  That was back in 2001 and I have been successfully self employed since because I knew the next time I saw some jackass manager with a god complex, I would fucking kill him violently :)  No it wasn't me, I'm a workaholic, the dickheads loved my productivity.

In my book, you can't go wrong as long as you take them aside and tell them with sincerity, talk to them like you would want to be talked to.  I know you're pretty good guy from your posts over the years so I'll bet you'll do fine.  Back when I worked for people, my philosophy was that a company hired a man to do the job and if he wasn't doing the job, the employer should take him aside and tell him he's not doing what he was hired to do, that's it.  In this case you got a guy doing his job but that has an issue that is effecting everyone else in the work place.  With that being the case, you are fully within your rights to address him in private and tell him what's up.

That's the bitch, telling a guy that he stinks.  There probably is no way to say it without some level of embarrasment so I would just be short and strait to the point.  If it's a guy you're going to keep around and don't want bad blood end your talk with him by changing the topic and spending a few minutes bullshitting about something after you've told him what's up.  This will totally change how he walks out the door after you talked to him.

sigh people always ask me why we continue hiring smelly people or folks that dont speak english

my answer...well as gas stations go...people with phds aren't exactly rushing to apply with  us...we pretty much get the bottom of the gene pool.. :(

although we do have 1 nigerian thats actually got a masters in math...been with us for 10 yrs..i simply have no idea why he's with us..he used to help me with my calc 2 homework..i have no clue why he's with us//hell my dad has even lectured him about not wasting time at a station and getting a real job.. :-\
