McCain will run on the "We need to colonize Iraqi oil in order to get gas prices down." line this fall.

As the reason for being there becomes more obvious to everyone - oil and bases - thanks to the web... Mccain has to do something.  Bush said 19 months ago "We have to contorl the oil so al-Q doesn't" paraphrased.

Imagine the moral conflict in the people who support the occupation, but consider themselves religious.  It's about taking their oil, and now they admit it...

Most of the oil is shipped not in pipelines, but through tankers stationed in Basra and owned by Iraq. and America wasn't in Basra, Britain was. Also the the biggest oil fields were near Basra which America wasn't directly involved in protecting.
Also Britain at the end were holed up in the an airfield while Mahdi Army went crazy stealing oil.

The real importance in all of this is the fact that the 7th fleet is there to protect the shipping lanes from Iran.

The Iraqi security agreement will hopefully be completed in July, so there would be no need to colonize.

Don't let little things like facts get in the way of your story.
