RPN Gut Health - WTF?
« on: September 02, 2008, 01:08:23 PM »
So I went to nutraplanet.com and this was one of the first things on the page so I clicked it out of curiosity. My question is with their ingredients label.

Supplement Facts

Serving Size: 1 Capsule
Servings per Container: 35

Lactobacillus CaseiKE-99(Live, Viable Organisms)
Amount Per Serving
1 billion organisms

OTHER INGREDIENTS:  Vegetable Cellulose (Capsule), Extra-Virgin Olive Oil

Is it just me or does anyone else find the amount per serving to be worded strange?

I'm not sure what you are getting at.  Probiotics are often sold with a listed number of organisims.  Nothing special about the label IMO.

It's a decent product, but I'd probably take double... conversely, it'd go out a lot faster so I don't buy it. If I could get it at cost or for half that price, I would honestly make that a staple. I'm getting a lot heavier into the health and wellness stuff lately. Lots of good shit out there, but it's all under dosed. :-\

Actually, the effective number of organisms depends on the specificity of the strain. KE-99 is extremely strong and hearty, and does not require a massive amount of colony forming units to effectively populate the intestines. In addition, one of the reasons other products use so many organisms is the fact that freeze-drying (the standard method of powdering and encapsulation) causes the death of many of the organisms, as well as doing nothing to protect the organisms from both the acidic environment of the stomach and the protease enzymes that are meant to break down proteins, such as contained in organisms.

The main reason you see so many organisms in inferior products is that they are HOPING that some of the organisms make it through the gastric environment intact in order to influence the population of the intestine. We simply do not need that many organisms in order to be effective, given the patented superiority of the strain and the enteric coating of the capsules.
