I haven’t dressed up for Halloween since my clubbing days;  I usually went as the “the graduate.”  Having a cap and gown in your closet comes in handy; not very original, but it served the purpose.

The major clubs in town always had a costume contest when Halloween rolled around.  One year, I went with a bodybuilder I used to hang with (ok, he was a fuck buddy) who dressed up as the Green Lantern.  I don’t know where he got his costume, but it was form fitting and he looked awesome in it!  He even had a green ring that would light up and glow!

I have to say, no one does Halloween like queers!  Sure there were the usual predictable costumes like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, etc… but some of the costumes were totally original, meticulously crafted, and downright fabulous!

I remember one year at the biggest club in town, as part of the costume contest, each person had to walk across a huge stage so everyone could see them and register applause.  As each contestant would gavotte across the stage, the announcer would call out the name of their costume; sometimes there was a soundtrack to accompany their sashay.

One guy walked out in drag; he was wearing a nondescript dress and a black wig.  If you saw him by himself his “costume” didn’t make much sense . . . but walking a few steps behind him was a very short man (he was no more than 4’ tall) in a gold bodysuit with wings coming out of his back.  He was carrying a large gold globe made of wire and he held it out and over his head.

This was the soundtrack accompanying them as they crossed the stage.
Immediately everyone knew what it was and roared with applause and laughter!

The announcer identified them as “Susan Lucci and her Emmy.”

Now, you have to remember this was right around the time that Susan Lucci finally won her Emmy award after being nominated more than 19 years in a row!  It was hilarious and everyone loved it!  I wish I had my digital camera back then; it was a priceless moment.

Susan Lucci and her Emmy won second place in the costume contest.
