"Armstrong's mysterious departure from the Stern show in 2005 was explained by Armstrong himself during a phone interview with Stern on July 1, 2005. He was fired by the station because of problems related to substance abuse, despite various attempts by his employers to help Armstrong get clean. He told Stern during the interview that he had daily thoughts of suicide and eventually suffered a mental breakdown.
