Donnie Thompson retires

http://www.powerliftingwatch.com/node/9859

On November 23, Donnie Thompson rattled the powerlifting world for the second time this year by again pushing the all-time total record to new heights. Now, Thompson is doing something even more shocking... stepping away from the sport he's on top of. Thompson has confirmed that he will no longer compete in powerlifting following the historic total he achieved two weeks ago at the IPA Senior Nationals in York, Pennsylvania.

Here's some of what Thompson leaves behind:
. Highest total of all-time (2,905)
. 2nd highest squat of all-time (1,235)
. Highest full meet bench press of all-time (910)
. 2005 WPO Superheavyweight Champion

Tomorrow, Powerlifting Watch will feature an interview with Thompson in which he talks about the reasons behind his retirement and reflects on his powerlifting career.

interesting.

way to go out on top... donnie is a man among men in this sport... simply amazing how strong this man is. I wonder if the injuries that came with achieving that total had something to do with this.  :'(

I talked to a couple of people at the meet I was at today about his retiring.   The general consensus (from people who actually know him) was that he has been looking to get out the last year, but for some reason didn't.  They mentioned one of Dave Tates interviews off Elitefts before he left Elitefts where he mentioned it first.  (I don't know, I'd have to rewatch the interviews).  Anyway, he decided to retire after this meet and all the bullshit over his total supposedly pushed him all the way to actual retirement instead of hemming and hawing around.

Now I have no idea if any of that is true.  I'm repeating what I heard today at a meet, it may be all bullshit.   I don't know.

I personally have to wonder about his overall health status.    He's sort of hinted at health concerns too.

the 2900 total is a joke, a bullshit. half squat, belly press, and no lockout on deadlift.
a joke. :(
