Shoe Bomb Joke on Plane Lands Missouri Groom-to-Be in Jail
Wednesday, January 07, 2009

ST. LOUIS  —  A St. Louis man landed in jail for joking about shoe bombs after he boarded a plane.

Michael Shafermeyer, 30, spent more than three days behind bars after making what he says was a joke at Lambert Airport.

When a flight attendant asked him to close his laptop after boarding on Saturday, Shafermeyer told KMOV-TV in St. Louis that he jokingly asked her, "Are you the one who checks for shoe bombs?"

He was flying to Maryland to get married and had had a few drinks, the station reported.

Within minutes, federal agents removed him from the plane. He was booked at the St. Louis County jail and placed in solitary confinement, where he spent two-and-a-half days before being placed with other inmates on his final day.

The prisoners welcomed him with a standing ovation, he said.

Shafermeyer was released on Tuesday. He has been charged with making a false bomb report, he told KMOV-TV.

Shafermeyer still plans to get married in Maryland, he said — but this time, he'll take the train.

However, he is getting married.  Can you blame him for drinking too much?????????

I can sympathize with him.  I'm a goof.  Always making lighthearted comments.  I fly a lot too.  I have to constantly remind myself to be "serious" when I'm going through security, etc.  It sucks.  Hopefully, I don't make headlines one day.   :)

I've heard you're not supposed to even say the word "bomb" on a plane...or even talk about the plane "going down."  Not sure if those are true though.

there are signs all over the place telling you not to make any such joke.

Even before 911 they were still very strict about this

I know a guy whose last name is "Balm" like Palm tree. When he goes to the airport, personnel always refer to him as Mr. Bal-m (as one syllable). Pronouncing it 'al' and making sure to articulate the 'L' instead of the 'awe' and making the 'L' silent. He doesn't dare ever correct them.  :o

That must be really awkward for some people at airports because we have a huge Canadian aircraft manufacturer called Bombardier. How do you say Bombardier without including the bomb? ???

ps: I also discovered you really don't want to mention "combustion catalyst" or talk about carrying a substance that makes fuel burn hotter & faster either. You can find yourself in the secondary inspection area very quickly.  :o

The TSA sucks...I'm in the air atleast once per month. If u travel overseas, they are strict but groomed, good at their job, and actually look like security folks. Our guys are overweight, or yaking at each other. They went to the blue uniforms to make them look more official. Most of these people were the same guards from before Uncle Sam took over and just changed in. They don't inspire confidence.

That was a great choice..... ::)Now they look sloppy in electric blue. I feel sorry for the guys in charge. They know what they want to do, and how to do, but their frontline employees suck. I think they ought to make them cops or something, part of Homeland security. Kind of like Uniformed Secret Service...give them some pride and decent training. The Koreans, Japs, Germans all have anti-terror polioce walking around or at the gates.

Have you ever checked into how much those guys get paid?  I think I saw it was like 26K/yr or something.

You aren't going to get much for 26K a year...

The TSA guys I met in Florida were Homeland Security. They were also ex cops and ex military.
There was an entire hotel full of them having their convention. Between the DHS convention, and the hotel being the host site for the athletes in the International Police Games, ... I've never felt so safe & secure while travelling in a very long time.

The particular ones I got friendly with went on to guard Obama at the Democratic convention afterward. They weren't the least bit overweight, and certainly didn't seem like riff-raff to me. They struck me as loyal, hard working, patriotic men, with a strong sense of duty to not only country but also their fellow man. They were sharp, observant, highly intuitive with great instincts and an affinity for reading people, ...but then again, I don't make friends with riff-raff (present Get Big company excepted)  :P

LOL, this is totally true, as I observed myself a week ago when I spent a stressed-out night with a friend at Salt Lake International Airport and watched the TSA shmucks stream in at 4:45 AM to start their shift.

Homeland Security and the TSA are separate, I'm not sure who u met but if they were a part of an Obama security detail they weren't airport guards.

Watch what you say.   :-\

I remember a story Paul Harvey told a while back about a man on a plane who told the flight attendant he had to get up to use the bathroom or "the roof will fly."  She interpreted that as a bomb threat.  They guy would probably be shot if he said that in today's climate.

Sorry, didn't mean to give the impression they were Secret Service, ...just that they were involved in certain security aspects during the Democratic Convention in Colorado.

They were Homeland Security, and they were also part of the TSA.

TSA doesn't only deal with airports or air travel. There's also ground and rail transportation as well etc., etc.,
