gawd damn.. Hyundai just doesn’t stop! 460hp Supercharged V8!!
« on: February 12, 2009, 11:27:29 AM »
That is one sexy engine

The Chicago Auto Show featured the Hyundai Genesis Coupe pricing and the debut of the Hyundai Genesis Coupe R-Spec, but it’s this 480 HP prototype supercharged Tau V8 that has our gears turning.

The 4.6 liter Tau V8 offered in the Hyundai Genesis Sedan normally cranks out 380 HP, but this prototype engine gets a screw-type roots supercharger with a novel clutched pulley, a water-to-air intercooler, and cylinder deactivation. This results in 460 HP and 435 lb-ft of torque while returning 8% better fuel economy.

The flow path is rather unique as well, with the supercharger intake at the rear, charged air going down into the intercooler and then back up into a split plenum which feeds the throttle at the rear of the engine. There aren’t any formal plans to introduce this engine to any product at the moment, but it exists, which means there’s a gleam in someone’s eye. Perhaps sooner or later we’ll get to run the Hyundai Genesis R-Spec Sedan versus the Chrysler 300C SRT8.

Problem is, Nobody is buying the Gen Sedan. And for the most part, it sux. Styling wise, and interior wise. You want a performance Sports sedan, wait for the 5 Series with the TT V8, that has 400 Hp and 450 pounde feet of torque.

The Gen fully loaded is around 35K, if not 40K, now you add the Supercharged Engine, your looking at 45-50k. Who is gonna pay that much for a Hyundai? Not when you can pick up a better S55 (circa 2003-2005) with more HP and power. Or because the Gen Sedan is a supposed 5 series competitor, There is the M5. This engine, is a study, if used in this current climate, it will be a duck outta water.

People used to mock Toyota too.  I'd probably buy a Hyundai before I bought a Ford or Chrysler.

the Fords in Europe are off the chain. And guess what? Ford of Europe is the second largest auto manufacturer after VW. They just surpassed Opel.

And look out for the NEW Taurus...Ford is not done yet....

People said the same sh*t about Lexus in 1990 and they now own a huge chunk of the luxury market and have among the best resale of all luxury vehicles not to mention high owner loyalty and minimal service issues.  The Lexus range starts from the high 30K and spreads all the way up to 100K+ for a loaded LS600H.

The Koreans have come a LONG way.  In ten years Hyundai will have shifted their image further away from a budget car company and more toward a Toyota/Honda perception of superior engineering and quality.  The Genesis is a big step forward.

I agree with you most of the time, but not this time.  The Genesis is very good looking and it's well made.

Your talking about a fully loaded new car, vs a 4-6 year old used car which will not be fully loaded.  It will be used with at least 40k in miles on it.  Thats not a good comparison and average people don't think like that.  To them new = better.  A fully loaded m5 is way more expensive than the genesis.  I would be careful writing Hyundai off, people said the same about Toyota and Lexus.  A fully loaded Genesis is certainly worth the money, people pay close to 40k for loaded BMW 1 series and audio a4's every day.  This car will appeal to those people.  Its far more bang for the buck.

This car is not ugly and it also won the car of the year award.  Have you driven one of these?  I have been in one and it's def worth what the ask for it.  I drive a BMW.

Actually with Lexus, Toyota created the brand for America...It's been said that Lexus stands for Luxury Export United States. Lexus, had Toyota's reknowned reliability. And Lexus, still does. I didn't really like Lexus until the IS300 came out, which is nothing but the I6 Altezza. And I still only like that model and IS-F. All the rest are :-\

Hyundai has come a long way, but most of their car range is "throw away" cars. Plus, The New Gen coupe's interior is rather cheap. The Gen is step for Hyundai---but it shows you something when they couldn't even decide on what grille to put on the car, and that was at the Car show. Plus, people have complained that the Idrive clone, is rather cheap in the Gen sedan, and gets loose.

I like the gen sedan. It is a good looking car, but its a terrible time to bring it out. I sell cars for a living and the company I work for sells everything from Ferrari to KIA. The owner of the company was driving a fully loaded gen and said he loved it. He has driven a Phaeton, LS600 and really anything else he wants those are the only 2 I can remember off the top of my head. The engine used in the Genesis is the same one used in the KIA borrego plenty of power. Supercharged it will be badass

I have only seen 1 Gen sedan on the road, and that was in a low rent part of MD. The styling is a bit bland, like they were trying to add a Lil bit of Lexus, a Lil bit of S class to the front, and BMW to the rear. The S55 I stated, typically is loaded. As a matter of fact go grab the new EVo magazine, they talk about some GOOOOD deals you get on Exotic cars now, due to the fact they the economy is bad.
