Is Albert worth $100 Mill
« on: February 27, 2009, 08:51:36 AM »
Albert Haynesworth hit the free-agent jackpot Friday morning by reaching agreement on a seven-year, $100 million deal with the Washington Redskins that could end up maxing out at $115 million based on his performance, according to sources.

The deal, which was reached early Friday morning, includes $41 million in guarantees. During the first 13 months of the contract, Haynesworth will earn approximately $32 million.

A news conference is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET at Redskins Park.

Haynesworth was bombarded with opportunities when free agency started a minute after midnight ET Friday. More teams contacted him than expected. During the first hour, Haynesworth had at least six teams willing to give him more than $30 million in guarantees.

He and his agent, Chad Speck, spent several hours reviewing the opportunities before making a decision. The final choices came down to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the team that had the most cap room in free agency, and the Redskins, the team that was the most aggressive.

The Titans' Albert Haynesworth shows why he is one of the top defensive tackles in the NFL.

The Tennessee Titans, the team Haynesworth played for in his first seven NFL seasons, never came close to signing him. A franchise player whose trip to the Pro Bowl prohibited the Titans from renewing the franchise tag in 2009, Haynesworth had hoped the Titans would offer him a deal that would have kept him off the free-agent market. That offer never materialized, even though the team kept talking to him until the start of free agency.

Haynesworth's deal with the Redskins is one of the richest in the history of the league.

Haynesworth led the Titans with a career-high 8½ sacks last season. He also had 75 tackles, 22 quarterback pressures, seven tackles for a loss and forced a team-high four fumbles.

John Clayton covers the NFL for ESPN.com. The Associated Press contributed to this story.

$41 million in guarantees is absolutely insane. Yeah, he's a stud but do you really see Haynesworth keeping this contract beyond year 3?? Probably not. But the contract is heavily front loaded with money to avoid salary cap issues over the next few seasons. I'm reading 32 mil over the first 13 months?? WOW. :o :o :o

Not worth the money, if you ask me. Daniel Snyder overspending once again! What recession??

Sure he is.  The Market dictates what someone is "worth".  The NFL is a multi billion dollar company and the players are the product.  Salaries grow every year.  5 years ago the biggest contract then was considered crazy.  Five years from now it will be the same thing. Do you know why the skins gave Albert 32 mill up-front?  Because there wont be a salery cap in two years.

That's right. Forgot about that. But I thought the salary cap was only going to be gone for one season?

But will they be able to go back after a taste of freedom?  I bet they gave Hanesworth all that money, so when there is no cap and someone gets some crazy sum of money from Jerry Jones, he doesent start bitching.

No cap = bad news.

I don't think he's worth $100 mil, but he's a stud.  Synder isn't afraid to write checks.  At least he wants to win.

Technically is 30 something million since gauarentees are all that matter, but I think they gave him what they did in case there is no cap over the next two years and guys start getting machine pay checks from owners like Jones and others.

Then again, he might get lazy since he got paid.

Was watching the local press conference last night and he was talking some big words. He said something along the lines of fulfulling this contract and becoming a hall of fame player. Stuff like that.

$41 million in guarantees is fucking mind-blowing.
