Took me a few minutes, but I found my copy; pages have browned nicely I see. The whole book is about one guy's obsession with and his fear of death. DeLillo uses this fear as a metaphor (white noise) for all the mindless crap going on these days. Death is the great unknowable; it is the opposite of all we experience and 'know.' I guess what scared me was that he described the absence(s) so well. Guy's an amazing writer. I remember that he noted that Tolstoy (as smart as they come!) 'screamed for 3 days' at his time. Very unnerving to have such stuff in a narrative. I had to read it in small chunks.

Oh yeah.  Some book written hundreds of years later by numerous authors about some guy they never even knew, but are writing off of spook stories heard from others.  Yeah,  let me run to Borders right now.  Which section should I look under?  Science Fiction or Children's?
