Well he finally got something right.
Obama Thanks UNC Coach and Team for Vindicating HimTimothy J. Alberta reports on the White House.
President Barack Obama phoned University of North Carolina coach Roy Williams from Air Force One Tuesday night to congratulate him on the Tar Heels’ victory in the NCAA basketball tournament—and to thank the team for validating his prognostication skills.
Three weeks ago, Obama picked UNC to win the tournament, and on Monday night, the Tar Heels defeated the Michigan State Spartans 89-72 to claim the school’s fifth national title. White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said in a statement today, “The President offered Coach Williams his congratulations and thanked him and his team for vindicating him in front of the entire country.
“The President told him he’d done a great job and asked the coach to tell the players how proud he was of them and that he looked forward to seeing them at the White House soon.”
When the champs make their customary visit to the White House it won’t be their first meeting with Obama. While campaigning in Chapel Hill last spring, the former high school guard found time to play a pick-up game with the future national champions.
Obama, a well-known sports fan, picked UNC to win last year’s national championship, too, but was disappointed when the Heels lost to Kansas in the national semifinal. Upon making this year’s picks, he issued a warning to North Carolina players: “Now, for all the Tar Heels who are watching, I picked you last year — you let me down,” Obama said. “This year, don’t embarrass me in front of the nation, all right? I’m counting on you. I still got those sneakers you guys gave me.”
Overall, the president’s bracket predictions were above average—he finished among the top 20% of the more than five million people who entered ESPN.com’s pool.
