Back off.

A totally asinine, backwards, inefficient and 10,000 page tax code needs a few people to care for it.

Forget the IRS, just ask for a new take on the 16th Amendment. Kind of sucks that the govt. can keep taking as much money as they deem "appropriate" from you.

Have fun funding pork, pet projects, welfare and other fun adventures.

The growth of the Govt in both size, power and control can be directly linked to the 16th Amendment.

If there was no income tax, and instead we paid a 25% sales tax on our purchases (except say, food), how much do you think you would've paid in taxes?  Rough estimate, to the nearest $25,000.

Honestly? Before the worldwide economic meltdown one could say it was the Eastern Bloc nations. Of course, they kept spending like they had a "progressive" tax system and were leveraged to the hilt from mad borrowing from W. European nations.

It almost isn't totally about just having the Flat Tax (I don't agree with it 100% either) it is about having some sort of easier and more efficient tax code, eliminating deductions and cutting the IRS and other such garbage to the bone. In my dream world, the govt. would have to apportion the incoming "revenue" from the taxpayers and we, as a nation/govt, would have to look into the abyss and really make the choice about wanting to pay for all the programs and huge govt etc etc.

In the case of the last 50 years, well, we haven't made that choice.....and now here we are.

Personally, I think a consumption tax will fail.

Is it fair? Sure.  However the average walmart shopper making 18k a year is ONLY doing to spend $18k a year, right?

Let's say he spends $5k of that at Walmart.

With a 25% flat tax, he'll still spend all his money ($5k) but he'll only purchase $4k worth of goods.  Can our nation survive a scenario where 20 or 25% of total goods stop being purchased?

I was hoping someone could show examples where this has worked in the past.  Usually it's rich guys like Forbes trying to sell it.  You don't see too many people making $18k asking for a 25% reduction in their buying power ;)

The complexity of the next tax code would shift to the classification of goods and services.

We would limit the sales tax on food to, say, 10%, but then tax on clothes would be 25%.

Tax on automobiles would be 20%, but maybe the tax on 'accessories' would be 30%.

The good thing about that is that we'd force people to learn responsible spending habits.  Can't afford the sales tax?  Then you can't afford the purchase, period.

Between my business and personal, I wasted $1400 for tax preparation.  The tax code is inefficient and needs to be changed.  I am all for some kind of consumption tax, national sales tax...at least there should be some heavy debate going on.
Between all the different taxes totalled, it feels like we are getting raped.

The politicians wont go for it since it means you having control over how much taxes you pay.

Right, thats why we must control the politicians.  When most of them get into office, they don't want to make cuts and spending decreases.  The people must speak out.
Actually I think its un-American to blindly criticizing the tea parties.  The basic point is a call to washington to exercise more restraint, stop printing $, stop the deficit spending and respect our tax dollars.  Should there have been a protest during Bush 2...of course.  But better late than never.
We cannot give up what made this country great.  The protest is just as much about the direction the government is going as what we are experiencing now.

And why do you think they are against this???

Very simple answer:

1.  They want unending taxes
2.  They want huge federal govt.
3.  They want more social spending
4.  They want amnesty for illegals
5.  They want even more taxes on business
6.  They want bailouts to continue forever
