Just a question, no other agenda.

I know there are several atheists and agnostics here.  I'm curious though, since you have no belief in God - certainly
not the Christian God, then why do you swear using such terminology?

G** D***!?

J**** CH****!

Holy ****!

It could be that you simply picked it up because other people use it, and it simply became a habit.  But for those of you who make a conscience effort NOT to believe anything, why not use something else?

It's even a more interesting question for the religious people from other faiths.  I've seen Jewish guys say J***** Ch****.  Why use him, and why not someone else?  Why not say "Holy Abraham!!!", or for someone else, "Great Buddah"!!, or Holy Muhammad!!! or Brahman D****!.  I've seen guys who come to this country who speak hardly any english, yet they're quick to pick up on christian swear words before anything else.

There are lot of faiths around and a lot of other founders and Gods to choose from, or no, you can choose no God at all. Why not say "Godless D***"!!!? or something like that?

Just asking.

I think it's becuase of the common use of vernacular.  Doesn't have to be menat in terms of religous cootation.  They can just as easily say, Son of a flying f*ck monkey and not realy mean to be derogatory to primates.

Just a force of habit.

out of respect for religious people i dont use the the Lords name in vain.  nothing wrong with cursing in the right environment, but i cant stand people who dont know what an appropriate venue is for that language

I do remember a Seinfeld episode where the term "Sweet Fancy Moses" was used by George regarding Elaine's "dancing."  Closest I ever saw to what you are asking.
