Do we have an inherent need for love?
« on: June 07, 2009, 01:04:36 PM »
I was reading a book the other day that stated that many psychologists agree that we have an inherent need to be loved.

I had to give the book to someone so I didn't see if he ever quoted any specific studies.

Do you believe people have an inherent need for love?

If you embrace evolution, wouldn't this be seen as a drawback?

No, 'love' fuels propagation and protection of the offspring.

Who knows what 'love' is? As wavelength would say, just an ego thing.

I suppose love fueling propagation is the case sometimes but it's not necessary.

The protection side of it makes sense though.  As far as evolution goes, when do you suppose love entered the picture?

I find this question unintelligible. Please be more precise.

Do you believe all life has descended from a single organism?

definitely, i believe it was socrates or plato who said that humans are political animals meaning we NEED the interaction of other humans. Love being most would argue the most pleasurable and the emotion that would indeed give the most assistance for rearing offspring would actually fall in line with evolution. I think its moved past that stage in all honesty but there is still a big evolutionary aspect to it one could argue.

There are alot of physiological events that happen when in love im sure youve heard of them stella. The chemical responses to touch as well are amazing did you know that even the touch of another person causes the release of a chemical called the "cuddle chemical" i believe its oxytocin or something like that but it sends you into a sort of euphoric state. Also im sure youve heard that even a male holding a baby can decrease testosterone in males. Each of these events can lead to the person feeling more compelled to stay with the individual and protect the offspring of theirs.

I agree..I've also read about a study done on orphans in china and russia where most do not get more than 10 min of human interaction. The psychological damage was significant concerning their development and other behaviors. SO sad to see the video and pics...teared up a little.

I wish that education, income and parenting classes were considered before people have babies. Too bad Gov't can't regulate it. Like here in the USA..if you are getting State bene's (Food stamps ect..) you should agree to be chemically / permanently sterilized. Especially if you have 3+ kids already. Same with a parent delinquent on child support on more than 3 kids

I pretty much agree with this, except for the holding babies decreasing testosterone part.   :D
