In the Military I received "MANDATORY" vaccines before deployment. (no shots= no deploy) Conversely, my children have never received "REQUIRED" childhood vaccines.

Big difference.

Which was???

Yes it was.  She said "required" within the first minute.  She isn't the only person who thinks this is possible:

This Fall: Mandatory Swine Flu Vaccines?
In a recent article on the unfolding economic collapse, Rep. Ron Paul warns that the hysterically hyped H1N1 flu “pandemic” may result in the government requiring mandatory flu vaccinations. “Nearly $8 billion will be spent to address a ‘potential pandemic flu’ which could result in mandatory vaccinations for no discernible reason other than to enrich the pharmaceutical companies that make the vaccine,” writes Paul.

this entire story is nonsense

obama isn't/can't make "all" people or even most of the US do anything

let's just pretend your worst nightmares were true

how many $'s can he spend on compliance?

if you're so inclined you should spend your time worrying about asteroids or maybe cancer or something real

Here is the definition of "requirement" from Webster's:  "that which is required; a thing demanded or obligatory."

Definition of "mandatory" from Webster's:  "authoritatively ordered; obligatory, compulsory."

Same thing.
Dictionaries are not the end all nor are they absolute.  Take it from Pinker as he sits on the board for the American Heritage Dictionary.

Steven Pinker (Guest Speaker)
I think dictionaries should inform the user what people's expectations are, and let them use their judgment. That is, flag a meaning or usage when it is generally considered uncouth or incorrect, or considered incorrect only by a few remaining pedants, and so on. After all, a dictionary should provide information, not be a policeman. The "usage notes" in the American Heritage Dictionary are a good model -- for a careful writer and speaker, they provide information on how others are likely to react to a usage, and you can do what you want with that information.

And a video of Pinker stating that Dictionaries are not the end all or the absolute:  http://fora.tv/2008/09/12/Steven_Pinker_The_Stuff_of_Thought#chapter_09

Also, Thomas Jefferson thought that dictionaries were quite annoying and that every citizen should create their own words and meanings as they see fit.

Okay.  And?  There are denotative and connotative meanings.  However you look at it, "required" and "mandatory" mean the same thing.

Judging from the date of OP's  youtube video, this http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/05/05/AR2009050503378.html is the article to which Meridith Viera is referring. If you read it, you see that there is no mention of a mandatory vaccine. It appears that Meridith, or whoever wrote that story, misunderstood their source material. The item was meant to highlight the fact that the government was recommending more than one vaccine, not that the vaccine was mandatory. Regardless of the differences between "mandatory" and "required", neither of those terms will apply to the swine flu vaccination campaign of the fall.

That figures.  And she called it unprecedented too.  Someone is being a dramaqueen for ratings.  Maybe's she's been watching Glenn Beck.
