Millions face shrinking Social Security payments
« on: August 23, 2009, 01:35:36 PM »
WASHINGTON – Millions of older people face shrinking Social Security checks next year, the first time in a generation that payments would not rise. The trustees who oversee Social Security are projecting there won't be a cost of living adjustment (COLA) for the next two years. That hasn't happened since automatic increases were adopted in 1975.

By law, Social Security benefits cannot go down. Nevertheless, monthly payments would drop for millions of people in the Medicare prescription drug program because the premiums, which often are deducted from Social Security payments, are scheduled to go up slightly.

"I will promise you, they count on that COLA," said Barbara Kennelly, a former Democratic congresswoman from Connecticut who now heads the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare. "To some people, it might not be a big deal. But to seniors, especially with their health care costs, it is a big deal."

Cost of living adjustments are pegged to inflation, which has been negative this year, largely because energy prices are below 2008 levels.

Advocates say older people still face higher prices because they spend a disproportionate amount of their income on health care, where costs rise faster than inflation. Many also have suffered from declining home values and shrinking stock portfolios just as they are relying on those assets for income.

"For many elderly, they don't feel that inflation is low because their expenses are still going up," said David Certner, legislative policy director for AARP. "Anyone who has savings and investments has seen some serious losses."

When energy prices go down they like to include it in "inflation" numbers, but when the energy prices are going up they don't include it in their reporting of rising "inflation".

"And, now, they're coming for your Social Security. They want your fucking retirement money. They want it back, so they can give it to their criminal friends on Wall Street. And you know something? They'll get it. They'll get it all, sooner or later, because
they own this fucking place. It's a big club, and you ain't in it."

Slapper:

The math does not lie.  When SS was formed, there were 16/1 ratio of workers to retirees.  Now there is moving to 3/1.

Additionally, the average life expectancy  has risen dramatically making the payouts that much larger.

Finally, the money was not put away as Decker likes to say, SS is a Maddoff scheme.

Its simply math for anyone honest enough to admit it.

Yes, the Chicago Boys have a name for it: Total social welfare annihilation while huge amounts of public funds indirectly flow into private hands.

It's the "invisible hand", the "market economy".

It's nirvana for the rich: An huge pool of non-unionized employees willing to work for gradually less money, more hours, no social net whatsoever. All the while paying HUGE amounts of money in taxes.

I've heard this before and I'm not stupid.

My word to Obama or whoever the fuck is in power: Find the money assholes.
