The MSG "Curtain Call"
« on: October 27, 2009, 06:10:42 PM »

The best part was the kid recording it – sounded like he was having an orgasm.

I know that Vince was pissed over the MSG incident, but listen to the pop it got. I think all four guys were over more after they broke character, and it really got the wheels turning for wrestling to get over the very simplistic & passe “good guy vs. bad guy” angle.

According to Michaels' dvd, all members involved in that incident approached Vince and they got the OK from him as it was the last time they would all be together in a ring. HHH got in shit for it and was forced to job for the next several months. Do you really think Vince would allow his wrestlers to break character and spoil the show in MSG of all places? Mind you, Michaels is a pathological liar so.....

Oh, so that’s why Hunter was stuck in programs with Waltman and the Godwynn’s, etc. for the next “X” number of months?

He eventually did some good stuff with the post-Michaels D-X, but you could almost tell he was on the old man’s shit list because he should have moved forward a lot earlier with all the momentum & popularity he had.

I’ve always said this:
HHH had to absorb more than his share of shit from the curtain call because he was the only one left for Vince to punish.

As for Shawn…
He’ll always be used in some capacity by the Fed because he and the old man have some kind of special relationship.
I don’t know exactly what it entails, but years ago a dude I knew wrestled for Les Thatcher and told me some of the more popular “stories” of what went on between VKM & HBK behind closed doors.

But I always took it with a grain of salt.

HHH became the best wrestler between 2000-2005 especially when he left DX and became amplified.

Being a fan of the kayfabe era, didn't like it.  What did it really accomplish?  It let the "smarks" know that HHH, HBK, Hall and Nash were really friends and that it's all just make believe?  Great.....but now we are supposed to be interested the next week and buy into fueds, etc...  I think the people in the crowd who popped thought they were probably seeing a heel or face turn by the guys, not the circle jerk of "look how cool we are", that it really was. I'll take my wrestling with being able to suspend belief for a few hours, it would be like watching a great action movie, or mystery movie and then as the credits roll, you see the actors (still appearing to be in character) grab-assing around.  My nephew that is 10 is still a mark, sort of, and it's so cool to view wrestling thru his eyes.  All things like this do/did was break that illusion earlier for kids.  Let them enjoy it, as "real life" will soon drag them down a few notches soon enough.

kayfabe era > attitude era to me......

Bullseye. They should not have done that.

I don’t understand why they did it.
Maybe you’d want to stick it to your boss on your way out, but only half of them were leaving.

Did they believe Vince would think it was cool?
Did they honestly and accurately anticipate the crowd’s reaction to it?

WTF was Hunter thinking?
He stood to lose the most. In fact, he was the only one Vince could punish.
Hall & Nash were leaving, and HBK was the champion and one half of the upcoming Mania’s main event.

As it was, HHH did suffer the most fallout from that incident.

HHH on his dvd basically said that the next morning after the curtain call incident he got a call from Vince's secretary telling him to meet Vince at am at titan towers. Vince basically told HHH that someone had to pay for that incident and that HHH "would have to eat shit for a while and like the taste of it."

^ ^ That’s funny.
To his credit, though, he stuck out the daft shit.
I guess it wasn’t much worse than his “Terra Rysing” gimmick in WCW.

But he paid his dues, won over the fans and WWF brass, and look where it got him.
Dude really played his cards right.

Didn't hurt to start banging the bosses daughter....although that could have backfired bigtime on him.

I totally agree with you there. He is the perfect "all round" wrestler.

It still could.

But, yes - I did intend that insinuation in my "played his cards right" comment.

It didn't hurt that he married Stephanie McMahon but he would have made it big regardless. If Vince new he didn't have what it took, he would have shut him down immediately. He it it all at the time. The body, the mic skills, the wrestling ability and the heat it took as a major heel to pop the crowd. As I said before, he was the perfect all round wrestler.
