The Postal Service reported a loss of $3.8 billion last year, despite a reduction of 40,000 full-time positions and other cost-cutting measures.

The loss was $1 billion more than the year before despite job cuts and other efforts designed to save billions of dollars, postal officials said Monday.

"Our 2009 fiscal year proved to be one of the most challenging in the history of the Postal Service," Chief Financial Officer Joseph Corbett said.

"The deep economic recession, and to a lesser extent the ongoing migration of mail to electronic alternatives, significantly affected all mail products, creating a large imbalance between revenues and costs," he said.

The post office has been struggling to cope with a decline in mail volume caused by the shift to the Internet as well as the recession that resulted in a drop in advertising and other mail. Total mail volume was 177.1 billion pieces, compared to 202.7 billion pieces in 2008, a decline of almost 13 percent.

For the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30 the agency had income of $68.1 billion, $6.8 billion less than in 2008. Expenditures were down $5.9 billion to $71.8 billion.

Postmaster General John Potter is seeking permission from Congress to reduce mail delivery from six days a week to five, a move that could save the agency $3.5 billion annually.

Imagine that....post office, medicare, social security, etc all loosing $.  The government underbudgets.  Do not pass healthcare with a public gov ran option!  The same pattern will emerge.

YEAH YEAH YEAH... The post office LYING as usual. The post office is NOT in the business of makign money (profit) but rather providing a service. The post office has been making profits in the BILLIONS for years and wishes to continue doing the same despite the massive loss of american business, shipping, shopping etc. The post office (government run) is being drained of its money by the american goverment to pay off its debt...the same way the US government has robbed the Social Security department of its reerves to pay debt.

Great straw...so that means, get out of iraq and stop pushing large government ran programs.  1 doesn't cancel the other out...both a waste of taxpayer $.

I don't see how it's completely fair to blame the Post Offices' woes on the fact that it's government run alone.  The internet, cell phones, etc. are just killing them.

They still have to have a person go to every single home and business irregardless of whether they are delivering one letter or 20 letters to each location and they can't just simply increase prices on the fly like Fed Ex.  I have no doubt that they have problems with efficiency and bureaucracy, but I think technology is just as much to blame.

The post office is becoming obselete by and large.  Between e-banking, email, etc, there is just not the need for 6 days of service.

I agree.  I wouldn't have any problem with 5 day service.  And if it will allow them to cover their budget shortfall and not raise stamp prices that much, then more power to them.

Just curious, but what do you think of the idea (not mine) of the government spinning them off to be a private corporation.  Have a stock sale, etc.  To me, they got the infrastructure to compete with Fed Ex, UPS, etc., and private ownership may help eliminate a lot of the fat.  Given the strength of the union, I don't see it happening, but if it did, I think it may be a positive thing.
