HBK over-selling Hulkster's offense @ Summer Slam:
« on: November 13, 2009, 03:53:18 PM »
From Wrestlinggonewrong.com:

During the 2005 WWE Summerslam pay-per-view on August 21 at the MCI Center in Washington, D.C., a match between Hulk Hogan and Shawn Michaels was set to headline the show!

Rumor has it that a two match series between the legends was set to take place with each person winning at least once. However, after it was planned for Hogan to win the first match, he backed out of the second citing a knee injury that was "acting up."

Realizing that he was getting the short end of the deal, it is said the Shawn then got revenge by his actions in the ring.

Is this an act of revenge, or perhaps its a classic example of a heel making a face look really, really powerful. We may never know.

The clothesline over the top rope at 1:07 is my favorite.

I don’t know, man.
It's rather questionable.
I think if his goal was to put Hogan over, HBK would have done it better than that.

Shawn is very smart and knows the difference between realistic & cheesy.
He knows how to skillfully tell a story in the ring.
I can’t ever recall him flopping around like a fish out of water for an entire match like that - particularly reacting that way to mediocre shots.

you would know better than me.  I'm sure if he was making a point, it was more to Vince, Hogan and the boys in the back because the avg fan would have no idea.

HBK was being a cunt, isn't that where he came out the next night  and basically tore Hogan a new ass saying he used politics to beat HBK?

I honestly don't remember.
I'd started losing interest by then.

I do know that Shawn's broken away from the script on more than a few occasions, and there are some rumors as to why the old man always lets him get away with it.

Are you saying Shawns knee problems have nothing to do with his in ring performances?

I'd have to visually inspect them.
It depends on how square they are.

Only Shawn knows for sure his motives that night.
I’m merely drawing comparisons between that match & the Shawn we’ve normally seen in hundreds of matches over the years.

I’ve seen a lot of HBK matches, and his style/behavior in that match is unlike anything I’ve ever seen from him.

The clever part is that – if called on it (and I suspect he was) – he could always just play innocent (I'm sure he did) and claim, “What?  I was just trying to put over Terry. He helped build this company from the ground level. It’s the least I could do. I busted my ass out there and the fans got a hell of a show.”

And knowing how Shawn is (he’s Shawn), you know he’s partly full of shit, nobody will do anything about it, your next match with him will look fantastic to the fans, and he will always be a pain in the ass.

I was there for that event and it was a really good match. I had no complaints about it.

Hogan is capable of some overselling, himself. Ironically, a lot of people in Oz actually bought it.

That’s funny.
I was over the girlfriend’s house tonight when that story aired on one of the news shows.
The preview showed a close up still of Hogan’s face all bloodied up, and the captioning read something like "Hulkster In More Trouble?"

Right away I said it was probably a work.
GF asked how I knew that before they showed any details.
I told her, “Look – he’s wearing a white shirt. He planned on bleeding for the cameras.”

As soon as they played the clip my presumption was confirmed.

the rock oversold a lot of hulk's moves at their WM match, but that was out of respect I think.

hard to say with shawn, given that he is so cocky..

haha, that was funny.  Not very well done, would have prefered a chair shot....or at least a punch....an open handed slap opening up that cut? hahaha

Overselling is part of the game. Its like when the undertaker grabs someone by the throat...the crowd goes nuts as the recipient takes the choke slam and goes into convulsions.

This match/fued was historic!!!!!!
I thought the Undertaker / Michaels Hell in the Cell was their best match followed by their recent WM match.
