NPC Nationals: What is given back to competitors?
« on: November 22, 2009, 07:31:21 AM »
There has been alot mentioned on this board and others about power bases in the bodybuilding indsustry. Despite what many may believe, bodybuilding supports many businesses that still make huge profits. For example, such businesses as professional wrestling, UFC, boxing and others, where their athletes have established roots in bodybuilding.

Many of these athletes have started in bodybuilding. In addition, supplement companies continue make alot of money from athletes. This is the obvious, however unlike many sports the athletes do not make the money. I have watched this for years. Wrestling which is still fake, was prominent in rural areas until the athletes became a brand and started making a difference. What can be done here? What changes can be made in this sport?

This past weekend over 500 athletes competed at the Nationals cumulatively spendig huge sums of money in preparation and travel to compete. Industry executives were there to capitalize and very little money given back to the competitors.  I am not recommending I have a solution but the solution will come from the fans and the athletes. What bodybuilder is establishing themselves as a real brand? If done successful, he or she will be a magnet for sponsorship and can change the industry over time. The power bases will no reign forever. Any suggestions?

My suggestion is for these people to wake the fuck up and find another outlet to dump all their hard earned money from selling drugs, G4P and scamming people into and train for the fun of being big and strong and the high of looking different than every other person in any given room at any given time.

My other suggestion os for the 400 out of the 500 competitors who were in Florida this weekend to get a J-O-B and pay their taxes and maybe secure a real future for temselves.

Like with most things, what's best for the people in power is rarely the same as what is best for society, or in this case, the sport.

500 athletes showing up is great for the people putting on the show.  500 entrance fees, a thousand or two family members buying tickets, all those hotel rooms, meals.  Then 45 people in a class step on stage and within 10 minutes its whittled down to 15.   No one can sit through all those hours of prejudging and very few have the interest to sit through the entire evening show.  You come for your family member's class, and then you leave.

With a system like this it's impossible to build a non-family-member fan base.

there is hardly a personality driven fan base in the pro ranks.   Kind of hard to develop that when the biggest names only compete once or twice a year.

It will never end unless someone decides to make this industry legit. The IFBB/NPC are NOT legit businesses. These 500 contestamts, mosy who trained their asses off for what? A plastc trophy or a card that says "pro"? The only ones that make money are the promoters. I've said this a thousand times, you want competitors to get paid, make it a legit industry, have all competitors sign a morals clause and if its violated in any way, fine or suspend them... PERIOD!

500+ competitors, and all of them are looking for various things.  Some are looking for that elusive pro card, to enter the IFBB Ranks, and establish themselves as one of the highest honors in bodybuilding, figure, fitness, etc.

Some are looking for fame, to get that magazine cover, to get into the pages of various magazines, and so show many, including themselves that they did look good, and made it to the Nationals.

Some are looking for a supplement company, or other companies to sponsor them, or have them work with them via ads, booth work, and much more.

Does it work?

Sometimes - there are many people that that look for someone new, someone different, someone who looked good for their magazines, for the booths.

You never know. There are people who scout for talent, for their booths, magazines, contracts and much more. I know a number of people who will get various pictures into the magazines, some work at expos and even some that will be hired eventually of supplement companies.

Is it worth it? Depending on how you did, how you feel.

To many it is...

Like with most things, what's best for the people in power is rarely the same as what is best for society, or in this case, the sport.

Just a few points on this:

What is beneficial for "society" is whatever benefits the interests of the choice-making individuals within society. In truth, "society" cannot benefit, cannot make choices; only individuals make choices, and thus only individuals bear costs and realize benefits. The only time that "society" is harmed by individual choice is when there are market failures such as spillover costs on third parties or the "free rider" problems associated with public goods provision.

500 entrance fees, a thousand or two family members buying tickets, all those hotel rooms, meals.

You have listed the overall private benefits of bodybuilding competitions - the promoters receive entrance fees, hotel companies acquire more business and can thus improve the efficiency of their operations, meals are purchased which go into the hands of grocers and farmers.  All of these people benefit.  As for the bodybuilders, they voluntarily engage in bodybuilding competitions.  No one has forced them to agree to the terms and if they do not wish to pay to compete then they should make another decision in their life.  No one forces a bodybuilder on stage with a cattle prod.

If bodybuilders do not feel that paying to compete and making little to no reward is worth it, why are they voluntarily engaging in this activity?
