I agree!  Some people on that list tip 15% which is fine.  But Obama donating only 1% of his income to charity?  Obama of all people?  What the heck?

Hugo - I always tip 20% for good service.  And when me and da boyz go out, its often a lot more if some girl is busting her ass ass briging drunks and food for us for hours. 

Most wait staff work off tips and have to split it with uncle sam, the bus boys, etc.

I usually tip 20% for good service and 15-18% for average service.  I'll tip 10% if the server was horrible.

The single biggest predictor of someone's altruism, Willett says, is religion. It increasingly correlates with conservative political affiliations because, as Brooks' book says, "the percentage of self-described Democrats who say they have 'no religion' has more than quadrupled since the early 1970s." America is largely divided between religious givers and secular nongivers, and the former are disproportionately conservative. One demonstration that religion is a strong determinant of charitable behavior is that the least charitable cohort is a relatively small one -- secular conservatives.

That really says it all. When the report came out, there were a few analyses that pointed out that  most, if not all, of the so-called gap was due to religious giving, including tithes. That's a very broad definition of charity.  I'm not gonna bother looking for a link because just form reading the part of the post that I excerpted, that should be the logical conclusion.
