Disgraced financier Bernie Madoff reportedly has been treated for serious injuries consistent with an assault.
Madoff, 71, was treated at Duke University Medical Center in Durham last Friday and discharged earlier this week, a local news station WDTV reported. Sources told the station he suffered facial fractures, broken ribs and a collapsed lung.
Madoff was sentenced to 150 years in March after pleading guilty to fraud and admitting to cheating investors out of billions of dollars.
Madoff's attorney, Ira Sorkin, told The Associated Press that Madoff has "had some dizzy spells and some high blood pressure."
Prison officials declined to reveal why he was transferred from a North Carolina federal prison to a hospital. But bureau spokeswoman Traci Billingsley did say there have been no assaults at the prison in the past week.
The Bureau of Prisons said Thursday that the 71-year-old disgraced financier remains under medical care for a seventh day.
