Because Festivus is all about the being the anti-christmas, the protagonist.. it goes against christmas, orthodox christmas, hannukah, and all other major organized religions holiday celebrations and says to hell with their b.s and trinkets, decoration and waste on presents..instead we should focus on the misery of the year that has passed and how each person at the gathering has dissapointed you over the course of the year (this is the airing of grievances)
