Here is another shot taken after winning the Mr Canada contest. The photographer had no experience shooting physiques so most of these images aren't quite right. I am posting it here, anyway. There weren't many from the contest worth buying. In 1980 and 1987 I found a guy who bought the original contest negatives but it wasn't worth his while to try to find them for me. The angle isn't right for this pose.

For a socialist, Tim's site is pretty accurate, but who did you compete against?

BTW, why does that "Mr. Canada" sign look like a ransom note?

Basile was a fkng bodybuilder before it was popular and before we even knew WTF it was... He was a pioneer.

We have no bashing rights. Enough said.

I have been in touch with Tim Foggerty and will update the info he has for the Mr Canada 1970 and Mr Pacific Northwest 1970. I will provide him with photos as well.

Tim needs help from others to get information and sometimes that is difficult to acquire about contests held decades ago.

Ray Beck didn't have much money to promote the contest properly and I think he lost money on the show. Heck, he had to pay the IFBB a big fee, in those days, just to stage the contest. Roz and I helped Ray
with the contest and I was working for Ray at the time in one of his gyms. Would you believe he asked me to select the judges! That wasn't easy. I had to find guys who were independent, honest and who had integrity. I picked two guys I knew well. One of them voted for me and the other didn't. That was fine by me because the contest was close. I tried to get 15 judges but fell short. Most were ex local champions or guys with long experience training.

We can imagine what Goodrum will say about this! Too bad, it is all water under the bridge. Who knows what happened in other contests out there. The contest wasn't fixed but it wasn't right that a competitor picked the judges. That is Ray Beck's fault but he knew I would do the right thing and get guys who were independent and who didn't show any bias.

Too bad, Goodrum, I am not giving the trophy back! I am 100% honest about things I say about bodybuilding, contests, individuals, and gym equipment. Period.

We even went to pick the trophies and arrange for the engravings. We had the trophies at our place before the show and I had fun holding the Mr Canada trophy and having a photo taken. At the time we didn't know who was coming from back east so there was no way I had a clue about the outcome. It was a surprise at night when I was announced the winner.

I think I helped set up the lighting for the stage. I also went around putting up posters for the contest. After I won, Ray took me and my trophy to the Vancouver Sun. They weren't interested. Here I was the first guy from outside of Eastern Canada to win that title and the paper turned me away. How embarrassing. Ray took out an advertisement in the paper to announce my win. He mentioned that I had a degree from university but got the university wrong. I graduated from UBC, not Simon Fraser. I did go to Simon Fraser in 1970 while working towards my masters degree in philosophy. That degree had to wait until 1989 when I earned a MEd from Sydney University. It took me 13 years part time because I taught high school, ran my gym, then started building gym equipment in 1982.

I retired from teaching in 1980 and opened a factory making gym equipment in 1982. I still design and build our gym equipment. Mostly I do repairs and modifications nowadays.

Things haven't changed much in the 40 years since then. Bodybuilding still doesn't get the attention it deserves.

One more photo from the contest. Here are the top 3 in the tall class at the Mr Canada. Joe Hing from Fiji was impressive as was John Mikl who was still a teenager. We all look a bit narrow in that photo because it was taken from below us. When you look at the top guys today you can't appreciate how really huge they are until you stand close to them.

Joe Hing on the left and John Mikl on the right.

Chuck Sipes was the guest poser. He also put on a strongman display where he bent a steel spike and a steel bar. He had the announcer read out some hype while he was doing his feats. He bent a 6 inch nail by wrapping a small towel around it. Then presto, one bend and it was U-shaped. He then tossed the spike to the audience where it was passed around. Several of us went out and bought steel nails to see how we could go. The 6 inch nail was fairly easy but in fairness to Chuck, he bent it much quicker than any of us. I was able to bend a 7 inch nail after some practice.
Awesome Rare shot Vince of the Great Chuck Spies thank-you for sharing that picture, he was one of the early Greats of muscularity , strength and power along with Reg Park

Ken Rivard was a loner. I don't know his background but I used to hang around English Bay Beach in Vancouver and Ken was there occasionally. I knew him from the gym so we were mates. Somehow he turned on me before the Mr Canada and acted rather cocky and ruthless. I would have helped him with his posing but he dismissed me. Things like that got to me and inside I wanted to show him. I told him to train his legs and work on his posing. That fell on deaf ears. When you look at his photo you see the guy was clearly huge and had good genes. The potential was there to be Mr Universe easily. However, like many other things in life it isn't always about potential but what you do with what you have. Sometimes lesser guys with more motivation succeed whereas the gifted don't.
yes those last couple of lines are correct absolutely right Vince.

muscle memory has plenty of wrong info...

it says lee priest won the ifbb overall mr australia in 1989 and 1990 when he did no such thing... he only won his class in 1990.
