Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid chided President Barack Obama Tuesday for making Las Vegas a “poster child” for excessive spending.

“I just spoke to the White House and told them that while the president is correct that people saving for college need to be fiscally responsible, the president needs to lay off Las Vegas and stop making it the poster child for where people shouldn't be spending their money,” Reid, a Democrat from Nevada, said in a statement.

Speaking about government spending at a New Hampshire town hall earlier today, Obama said “when times are tough, you tighten your belts.”

He added: “You don't go buying a boat when you can barely pay your mortgage. You don't blow a bunch of cash in Vegas when you're trying to save for college.”

In a letter to Reid, the president apologized for the perceived slight. Addressing the letter “Dear Harry,” Obama wrote: “I hope you know that during my Town Hall today, I wasn’t saying anything negative about Las Vegas. I was making the simple point that families use vacation dollars, not college tuition money, to have fun. There is no place better to have fun than Vegas, one of our country’s great destinations. I have always enjoyed my visits, look forward to visiting in a few weeks, and hope folks will visit in record numbers this year.”

Last year, Obama drew criticism from Nevada politicians for criticizing junkets to Las Vegas by bailed-out banks – and Reid’s political opponents accused him for not taking a tough enough line against the president.

But on Tuesday, Reid responded with a swift criticism of the president’s comments.

"Nevada is the nation's top destination for tourism and conventions,” Reid said in a statement. “It is more popular than any other place in the country, and for good reason: It's affordable, easy to get to from anywhere, and the weather is perfect.”

He added: "To truly reenergize our economy, we need people to travel to Las Vegas. I would much rather tourists and business travelers spend their money in Las Vegas than spend it overseas."

Democratic Rep. Shelley Berkley, the Las Vegas-area congresswoman, issued a strongly worded statement Tuesday night, saying she was lodging a complaint with the White House to explain the negative impact the president's comments will have on her city.

"Enough is enough!" Berkley said. "President Obama needs to stop picking on Las Vegas and he needs to let Americans decide for themselves how and where to spend their hard earned vacation dollars. This is the second time he’s pointed a finger in our direction and both times he’s been wrong to single out Las Vegas."

Reid is desperately trying to save his job.

Pelosi and Reid have been benched.  Obama's been the face of the party since the Brown fiasco.  gallup just moved him up to 51%.

Really?  Seems to me the scrambled dem party is uniting behind obama at the moment, getting on message with what he's selling, and pushing reid/pelosi off the pedestal.

It's the GOP that should be worried... tea party infighting is destroying their $500 plate lobster dinner and speakers are canceling?  And of course, Tea party vs. moderate GOP is tearing them up as well, with the strong likelihood some R's will lose their primary to a tea party member then run as an Independent to win in the general ala Lieberman.

1.  Dems are revolting over the KSM trial.

2.  Dems in dissaray over jobs bill & health care.

3.  Reid, Lincoln, Dorgan, Specter, and others probably donezo.

4.  Typical RAT voter doesnt vote in the midterm this cycle.

Obama quietly moved the KSM trial.

They are employing a concerted effort this week to point out the 'ripple' effect, saying the mess started with Bush and that the stim bill was akin to a one-time hit to nullify bush's damage - and that we're clearly on the path to recovery.  IF IF IF the economy is any better in Nov, then he' in good shape.

True or not, some people will buy it.

Then, of course, you have 7 repubs walking away from the bipartisan budget recommendation committee THAT THEY PROPOSED once obama endorsed it - they ain't working with him no matter what - even when it's their bill.  They voted against their own bill, just to spite him - and he's talking about it in NHampshire today.

He's doing town halls, almost campaigning.  And for the last 2 weeks, it's been effective.  Many people (here also) expected we'd see him plummet after the Brown disaster.  instead, he's climbed from 46 to 52% now.

correct.  He's a salesman.  he's certainly not an accountant.  He can't organize shit.  He is surely lost and confused sometimes.  And he begs forgiveness just a little much.

Still, he's a helluva salesman.  Did you watch his speech today (the one FOX cut)?  He's very strong again.  His press conferences as president are weak and boring.  But in front of a crowd, he's very good.

I sat through most of that speech today and I felt my brain ooze out of my ears.  I've never heard so many words which meant so little.  The man lies about responsibility and yet is the cause of irresponsibility.

Obama is the worst and the best thing to happen to American politics in my lifetime.

In yesterdays paper, the AG's office actually had the balls to say that trying KSM in NYC was "not off the table yet."

I have to say, Van Jones and Janet Napolitano included-- Holder is far and away the biggest joke of an apointee by the Obama administration.

The Obama Women Are in Vegas (Vacation number 17 since 2008)

It’s spring break for the Obama daughters and mom has taken them West for the week. Michelle Obama and her daughters visited Mount Rushmore Wednesday to see the monument where four U.S. presidents are immortalized in stone on the soaring mountainside.

Now the Obamas have arrived in Las Vegas for a private family visit.

At the depths of the recession, President Obama seemed to disparage Las Vegas visits, at one point warning hard-pressed Americans, “You don’t blow a bunch of cash in Vegas when you’re trying to save for college.”

There is lingering dismay in the Las Vegas travel and tourism industry but, during the political campaign, Obama has been a frequent visitor on official and political trips to the swing state of Nevada.
