Royce Gracie was a big fan of the slap punch.  It can be effective.  Hit a heavy bag hard and you'll see you can knock a guy out with a slap.  I remember Royce using the slap in a MMA fight and the guy he fought responded with a closed fist punch.  Royce didn't slap again in that fight after getting tagged.

Watch pancrase, especially bas rutten, he fucked people up with "slaps"
