Should retirees leave the US?

Healthcare isn't anywhere near North America.  I'd say retirees in the states should focus on small town living.  Plenty of affordable places with excellent health in every state.  Most people who live in 3rd world or developing countries get our of dodge by 65 when they start to have serious health care issues.  There's a reason why life expectancy is LONGER in North America.

My friend is leaving for Costa Rica on Tuesday.  He is looking into buying the Sports Bar down there called Los Amigos in Jaco Beach.  Do you know anything in this area.  He wants me to move there with him,  I want do that but I will probably go down and help once in awhile and do as much as I can from here.  He is going down to do some due diligence and get some info.  Not too sure about it though.  I know nothing about Costa Rica.  I guess I could be like Goodrum and read a National Geographic and be an expert but just too busy.

What's so damn hot in Costa Rica ?? Lately everyone is raving about Costa Rica and telling everyone else about living in Costa Rica.

A friend of mine is planning to open a gym down there.

Another just purchased a big plot of beachfront property.

Another flies down at least once a month to get foooked up and meet the local ladies.

And many a featured Hollywood film is thinking of (or has been using Costa Rica) as a scenic background.

And the rich and famous have secret randevous spots up and down that coastline.

Better buy land there now before it gets too damn popular.

Mhm, I'm sensing bullshit and someone that's never been outside his hometown. Costa Rica has excellent health care. One two occasions I had to make use of their ER's and it was like any other first world country I've ever been to. I was promptly served in fluent English, taking for X-rays (played basketball and broke my thumb) and had a follow up call the next day for another appointment. In fact, here in the UK I've constantly had worse service that I did in Costa Rica. Costa Rica's life expectancy is constantly placed ahead of the United States and Britain.

I'd recommend anyone to go live there, awesome climate, outdoors healthy living, good food, cheap living costs, everyone speaks English, safe neighbourhoods and tons of expat Americans if that's your thing. Also just a short flight away from the U.S if you're feeling home sick.

I find it funny too. I've been going there since the mid 90's and it was exactly the same as it is now. I guess people are just slowly waking up and realising there is still cheap holidays in the sun left.

I don't know that particular area. I always go to Coco or Santa D. I can however recommend living there without harbouring any doubts whatsoever. Don't expect to be come rich, but if it's quality of life you're after, kind people that still values family life above working 100 hours a week and making millions, excellent climate and cheap costs of living, then you can't go wrong.

Pointless post trying to safe face after you've been corrected on your non existent knowledge of the world outside the block you live on. I have visited the United States more times than you've brushed your teeth the past 12 months, so trying to pretend I have something against Americans is worth smiling about. I have nothing against nationalities, I have something against clueless ignorant dicks. Trying to turn this into a lowlife childish debate on nationalities would be a funny observing you fluttering around for some substance.

Anyway. I trust the rest of the readers would look past the mutterings of a fool, and while I strongly recommend visiting the country to see for yourself, I'm also advocating doing your own research to see if living abroad is really your thing.

I'm not going to knock heads with you as I cannot be asked with internet wars tonight. You've had your experiences and I respect that it shaped your thinking. I'm just clarifying to other people that it might not be the same for them and they might find something in the '3rd world' worth retiring to.

noworries and others that are thinking of going over to Costa Rica, really, go check it out. You might find your new home.

"Some seniors are finding it hard to live in the United States on their pensions. Costs in the US for housing and medical care keep rising faster than fixed pensions can keep up with. Taxes keep rising, and seniors just can't afford them anymore. So they sell their homes, and look elsewhere for cheaper living. Florida used to be a haven for retirees, but now costs are rising there also. What can a senior do? They can look at places like Mexico, Central America and South America. Others find places like the Philippines and Thailand to their liking. Europe also has some cheaper havens for US retirees to enjoy.

http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/153926/bargain_seeking_seniors_are_leaving_pg2.html?cat=12

Pension money lasts a lot longer, for instance, in Mexico. Seniors living there like the climate and living costs are much cheaper. They are finding that Mexican doctors and dentists have trained in the United States and give excellent medical care at lower costs. Mexico is close enough to the United States that seniors can travel back to see their loved ones occasionally. The food is good there. There is history, architecture and culture in Mexico that Americans find appealing. Some just like the laid-back lifestyle.

There is a large group of about 60,000 Americans living around the Lake Chapala region of Mexico. They enjoy an active lifestyle of golf and socializing there. Gardening and household help is cheap there and makes it easier on seniors. The food is fresher and cheaper. It is picked daily and contains fewer harmful chemicals to ingest

G, you are missing the point, why retire, count pennies, move to a small town and live a life of boredom?

why not to retire costa rica/panama or some other place where your buying power is multiplied and live in relative comfort?

Most retired Americans are probably better off moving to a "3rd world country"!  social security will pay about $18-28K per year, combined with personal savings, investments and 401K you should be able to live a very comfortable there.

When you factor in the lower cost of living I don't see why anyone would retire and stay in the US.  The key is to find the right country and section in that country to live in.

any recommendations?  It has to be a country where your US dollars can be leveraged to a standard well above how you would live in the US.

some place like Costa Rica or Grenada?

and to make this bodybuilding related: this will make you get striated glutes and bench 400 for reps

Never liked what happened to the Indians. One of the greatest injustices in our History. Along with Slavery.
