Hitler did not think that the Western allies would have the balls to declare war on him when he invaded Poland. He and Ribbentrop were sure the weak willed democracies wouldn't back up their promises to help Poland-after all, they continually backed down and let him have his way.
France actually toyed with the idea of not declaring war, but were somewhat shamed into it by England.

"A regional border dispute" is what you call the dismemberment, genocide, and conquest of Poland by Nazi Germany? Hitler wanted war, the Danzig bullshit was just his excuse to the outside world.
despite what we've all been lead to believe, he was not trying to 'take over the world'. forget hindsight, think about the situation as it was in that time and place-would anyone, even hitler, honestly believe that germany had the capacity-in any form- to even fight the kind of war that ended up taking place-much less 'taking over the world'?
anyone who actually researches it instead of eating up what we've all been fed can EASILY blame the World War on Churchill because he was the one responsible for it. had Britain not declared war completely unprovoked, the most that would have happened was that germany would have simply retaken the territory swindled from them at versailles, and maybe eventually fought the soviet union.
it would have been a GOOD thing. germany would have remained friendly or at least neutral with the western powers, would have crushed communism in eastern europe, there would have been no Communist Russia as a world power, no vietnam, no korea, no cold war, NO MONUMENTALLY TRAGIC GLOBAL WAR, britain wouldn't have lost their entire empire, the west would have maintained their world dominance, the united states would not have lost hundreds of thousands fighting a foreign war, etc etc...
Hitler wanted no part of fighting britain, in fact germany tried in vain to make an alliance or at least maintain peace with britain, he had NO designs on attacking britain (why would he?) or their empire territories, admired the british and their empire and thought it crucial that the empire be maintained, but the egotistical, power-hungry snobbish, (also racist and anti-semitic) demagogue Churchill and his cabal of supporters defied all common sense and brought a declaration of war on germany..this was the KEY point in the entire event because when they did so, they involved their entire global empire and all their allies, including france and the united states, essentially turning a central-european border issue into a global war.
instead of allowing germany to restore their former territory, and maybe confront and defeat the spectre of communism on their own, allowing the british empire and the west to maintain dominance in the world, the fool churchill acted brashly and as a result the western world fought itself, germany and western europe were destroyed and forever weakened, britain suffered enormous damage and casualties, lost its ENTIRE empire and was relegated to second-rate status in the world, and Soviet Communism was allowed to thrive, grow, and attain world power status, leading to the cold war and dead-end gridlock wars all over the world resulting in countless death and no results, and the western world lost its grip and influence over the globe forever.
