Having problems with diet, keto...
« on: March 11, 2010, 06:32:21 AM »
I started out at 330 lbs with very high bodyfat, in the last 9 weeks I have gone down to 270 lbs on a super low carb diet. My problem is that I am having issues now with eating at all. I am afraid to eat anything and feel like I will always be a fat ass. I have successfully dieted to 190lbs in the past and even then my stomach was very flabby and fat, I know I lost a lot of muscle doing this, but I don't know how to lose weight properly. Right now I am on HRT 200mg EOW of test cyp because I have low testosterone levels. I had 247 on my blood test. I want to lose weight properly and be cut for once in my life. Being on the test I hope will help, the extra fat on my midsection no matter what is what made me see the doctor and get tested in the first place. Does anyone know what I can do to get out of this funk. I am relying way to much on what the scale says and I have never been on test before and I want to take advantage but I know I am doing it wrong.

This is a sample of my workout/cardio routine:

Day 1: Back/tri - cardio 30 mins 3.0 incline, 3.0 speed w/ 6.0 incline and 3.0 speed 1-1 interval
Day 2: cardio 1 hr interval 3.0 incline, 3.0 speed with 6.0 incline and 3.0 speed 1-1 interval
Day 3: Chest/bi cardio same as day 1
Day 4: cardio same as day 2
Day 5: Shoulders cardio same as day 1
Day 6: cardio same as day 2
Day 7: rest

No leg work outs yet because of nagging, slow hamstring recovery from non-workout related incident

Diet is practically 0 carbs every day, once every week or two I have a cheat meal with a few beers and wings with or with out fries

Past week or so I have been taking in under 1000 calories and still doing the same workout routines ... This can't be healthy. Can someone please recommend a sane diet and workout routine that I can cut fat with. I am not looking to be huge and don't mind losing some muscle along the way, I just have never been cut before and I want to be. But I am probably hurting myself along the way. If anyone has gone through this or can help me with a proven diet please do. Thanks for your time.

You have got it all wrong.

First if you are serious about this then forget the beers, wings and fries.

Get between 30-50 grams of complex carbs / day ( oatmeal, spinich, greens, ext )
The key is to NOT EAT SUGAR or any foods that will cause the huge spike in insulin.

Get some Keto sticks ( check ebay for them, should be about $10 for 100 strips ).  it will turn a pink color if you are burning fat, and won't change color if you aren't.  Certain bodily functions need carbs, Going to Zero carbs will cause your body to eat up your muscle.

I was able to drop from 218 to 202 in 2 weeks using the keto diet and the Keto sticks as a guide.

If you really want to reach your goal,  I suggest you get yourself a MP3 player, load up some motivating tunes, and starting doing cardio every day ( 45 minutes Minimal ) twice a day if you can break it up with morning and evening cardio.  Don't take off weekends, and don't cheat.  Don't obsess on your appearance, instead obsess with your lifestyle.  If you change the lifestyle, the outer appearance will follow.

To add to Dark, 1000 calories is WAYYYY WAAAYYY too low.  No one should be on that few of calories.  It will slow your metabolism to a standstill, if it hasn't already, not to mention, mess with your test levels. You should worry about losing muscle.  You want to keep as much as possible. Stop worrying about the scale and get those calories up to a sane level of ~2000.  Look at he above stickies for clean foods and diets.

Darksol gave you good advice, especially with the mp3 player!

Here are some of my thoughts:

What is your height?

Age?

Now that you are under 270 it is now time to start jogging enough of this Jay Cutler style walking bullshit.  Don't worry, 30 min of jogging won't make you go catabolic.

Forget that once a week cheat, that just makes keto diet 10x harder than it has to be.

What do you usually eat?  I have had a similar issue and to limit my worry I would just eat like two low carb meals a day and have a couple protein shakes.  Takes the guess work out and gives you confidence you are getting enough protein.

Who cares if you lose a lot of muscle, it's still better than having muscle that is covered by 300lbs of fat!

I think now with you taking test you will be able to diet just fine and get ripped.

1000 cals is too low.  One keto generally you don't have to worry a ton about cals, just keep the carbs low and don't intentionally pig out.

Good luck and just stay motivated.  Great results don't happen over night.

Just to add something else.
You said you were taking in 1000 calories /day.
If you are going by the typical propaganda that most americans go by, this means you are eating almost no carbs and no fat.  The problem is fat is needed to maintain your Test levels.  Don't worry about fat or Protein, eat all you want.  Just keep the carbs down to 30-50 grams / day and ensure you only eat slow digesting carbs ( no sugars! ).  Seriously I eat string cheese and pepperonis all day( very high in fat ) and I am loosing fat while gaining muscle.  If you are having a hard time trying to find a good source of fat, get a cheap bottle of Olive oil and kick back a shot daily.

If you need some kind of litmus test to let you know you are on the right path get the KETO test strips, and keep your diet to a point where the sticks are a light pink color.

Like I said before focus on the lifestyle, not the image.
I have never met a marathon runner that looked like a fat ass.

Agreed, you should never attempt a low carb and low fat diet!  Just keep the carbs low and you will be fine.
