PLACERVILLE, Calif. -- Two people are dead after a road rage incident near Placerville. It happened at Broadway and Newtown Road near Highway 50 at about 2:45 p.m. El Dorado County Sheriff's Sgt. Jim Byers said after several miles the vehicles came to a stop after a crash. Investigators said they believe the driver of a burgundy truck got out of his vehicle and shot the driver of the green SUV and then turned the gun on himself, shooting himself.
The driver of the truck, identified as 36-year-old Jensen Cornelius Kohutek, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the SUV, a 49-year-old man, was transported to Marshall Hospital in Placerville with life-threatening injuries. He died a short time later.
Byers said it is very rare for a road rage incident to go this far. "[It's] very rare that we see it end at this level where people lose their lives, but that’s always the chance you take and it's just a very unfortunate incident," Byers said.
Investigators said a gun was recovered from the burgundy truck. A 72-year-old female passenger in the truck was interviewed by authorities.
