Avoid Calorie Dense Foods to Prevent Lipid Storage

It is important to keep protein levels high to build lean muscle and keep caloric intake at just enough to support activity levels (2,000-2,500) without creating an excess. Excess calories are stored as fat, they do not build lean muscle as some people believe. Protein builds muscle, calories support activity levels and most importantly, basic life functions. To avoid excess calories and thus fat storage, while building lean mass, avoid foods that are dense in calories. Generally, foods that are calorie dense will be in high fat since fat carries with it 9 calories per gram. For example, salmon may appear like a good option for a bodybuilder at first since it packs about 85-90 grams of protein per pound, but once the calories are evaluated and compared to a fish like tilapia, the truth is clear. Salmon has 800 calories per pound, a lot of those calories coming from fat. Tilapia, on the otherhand has the same amount of protein but 400 less calories per pound! It is important to make these comparisons when choosing the right foods for bodybuilding.
