Another true story which really impressed me about dogs ......
I had two dogs. One was a very small black Labrador (Hot Pants) and the second was a Benji type dog (Thumper). Both were rescued from the SPCA on the same afternoon.
Hot Pants was named after a wrestling friend by the name of Don Moraco
Pants and Thumper became very close friends and they were always together.
But Pants used to love to follow the kids to school which was about two blocks away along a very busy highway .... Kalanianiole Hwy.
So one weekday morning I was lying in bed and Thumper comes running into my room and starts 'digging' at my chest. I notice he's in a very excited condition so I hop out of bed, get dressed and head on off to see what the problem is.
He heads running off down the highway and I'm right behind him and can see Hot Pants lying on the side of the road a short distance away. Thumper runs to him and lays down beside him as if to keep him warm never taking his eyes off of me as I come running to them.
Hot Pants is one hell of a mess with blood all over him so I pick him up and start running back home to get my car. By the time I get to the car, Thumper is already sitting inside waiting for us. And I hop in with Hot Pants and head off down the highway for the animal hospital which is less than a mile away.
We get inside and the doc looks at Hot Pants and tells me that he's pretty banged up and looks like he had been dragged along the highway by a car.
"Do you really want me to try to save him?"
I take a look at Thumper who seems to know what's happening. Is he encouraging me to tell the doc to do what he can do?
So I say, "Yes!" and we leave Hot Pants in the doc's care.
Five days later we get a call to come and pick Hot Pants up. He's all bandaged up but ready to come home.
So I get the keys and go to the car and there's Thumper all ready to go.
We pick up Hot Pants and he looks like an Egyptian mummy all bandaged up. Thumper simply licks his nose to say, "Welcome back!" and we head on back home.
Took a good long while but Hot Pants eventually recovered and still followed those kids to school but a bit further from the traffic this time. I'd often get a call from the principal asking me if I could come and pick up Hot Pants and his little buddy -Thumper because the kids had a hard time studying whenever Thumper and Hot Pants were waiting for them in the school yard.
Dogs are amazing critters.
