Holder: Feds may sue over Arizona immigration law
By the CNN Wire Staff
May 9, 2010

Washington (CNN) -- Attorney General Eric Holder said Sunday that the Justice Department was considering a federal lawsuit against Arizona's new immigration law.

"We are considering all of our options. One possibility is filing a lawsuit," Holder told NBC's "Meet the Press." Possible grounds for the lawsuit would be whether the Arizona law could lead to civil rights violations, he said.

The recently enacted Arizona law initially allowed police to ask anyone for proof of legal U.S. residency, based solely on a police officer's suspicion that the person might be in the country illegally. Arizona lawmakers soon amended the law so that officers could check a person's status only if the person had been stopped or arrested for another reason.

Critics say the law will lead to racial profiling, while supporters say it involves no racial profiling and is needed to crack down on increasing crime involving illegal immigrants.
In Arizona, the city councils of Tucson and Flagstaff have decided to challenge the new immigration law in court.

Holder said comprehensive federal immigration reform is the best approach for the problem of illegal immigrants crossing U.S. borders. His stance echoed the approach favored by President Obama, who last week criticized the Arizona law and said he wants Congress to work on the issue this year.

Comprehensive immigration reform would include continuing government efforts to secure borders from illegal immigrants, as well as steps to crack down on businesses that employ them, Obama said at a Cinco de Mayo celebration at the White House.

In addition, he said, those living illegally in the United States would have to pay a penalty and any taxes they owe, learn English and "make themselves right with the law" before starting the process of gaining U.S. citizenship.

ain't no CW2 going to happen.  Smart conservatives will sit home and guard their ranch.  Libs will beg on the street corner.  Anyone who acts up will be capped.  No romantic heroic aspect to it.

Anyway, mccain's atty general would be selling this same piece of shit bill right now as well.  Please stop blaming politics for everything.  our president will deliver amnesty eventually, no matter the party.  Mccain/palin both supported the amnesty bill, remember?  As did bush.  As did hilary, right?  Whoever gets in will back this POS.

Palin, Bush, blah blah blah.  They're not in office.  It's Obama, the current POTUS, who is pushing this crap.  Anyone opposed to amnesty should be upset with Holder's comments.

and I'm saying that OF COURSE we should be upset at his comments.  I did call it a POS bill.

Then I pointed out this isn't a partisan issue.  leaders of both parties push this crap thru.

Exactly.  The moral equivalency stuff is overused and completely ineffective.  This is about a bad idea being pushed by the current administration.

I agree.

Have them pay a fine??   "Make themselves right with the law."  ::  How about send them home and tell them to get in line behind those who have been waiting for years to do it the right way.

Kinda  a few million Chinese showing up in Cali all of sudden? "What are you gonna do, send us back? No, give us Amnesty, you gave it to the Mexicans, why not us? That's discrimination!"

Furthermore, when said illegal immigrants get citizenship, do you think that they will pay taxes? Hell No! Especially if many aren't working or can't find work, or get paid under the table. If you break the law to get in, and break the law when you are here, chances are you are going to continue that path, once you have citizenship.

haha no shit... what happens when other countries start quietly giving their prisoners and troublemakers a one-way plane ticket to a border town.

"Make it across the border and you get to be an american citizen... don't make it, it's back to the gulag..."

The problem is republicans love it for buisiness and libs love it for votes. So both parties love it.

Fred Imus[Dons brother ]made a great point the other day. There are two ways you can end this.Deadly force at the border and jail employers for hiring illegals.Neither party will go for those things.
