Poll: Crist Leads Florida Senate Race

Looks like he made the right decision (so far).

Poll: Crist Leads Florida Senate Race
Friday, 07 May 2010
By: Dan Weil

Former Republican turned independent Charlie Crist leads Florida’s three-way Senate race by 6 percentage points, according to a new Mason-Dixon poll.

The governor has 38 percent support, compared to 32 percent for Republican Marco Rubio and 19 percent for Democrat Kendrick Meek.

The results nearly match a Rasmussen poll released earlier in the week showing Crist with 38 percent support, Rubio with 34 percent and Meek with 17 percent.

Two weeks ago Crist trailed Rubio by 7 percentage points in a Rasmussen poll.

Star political consultant Dick Morris, a Newsmax contributor, minimized the significance of the new polls in an interview with Newsmax.TV.

“He can’t win,” Morris said of Crist. “It’s just a burst of enthusiasm after his declaration. He just had a lot of statewide media attention.”

Morris expressed disgust with the governor’s decision to leave the GOP.

“Crist engaged in an unpardonable act of egomania,” Morris said. “But if he’s elected, so be it. Just as long as he doesn’t split the vote and elect the Democrat Meek.”

One result of the Mason-Dixon poll is troubling for Crist: much of his support comes from Democrats and blacks. Fifty-five percent of Democrats support him, and so do 19 percent of blacks.

Those groups may well shift their support to Meek, a congressman from South Florida, once they learn more about him.

About 40 percent of likely voters remain unfamiliar with him.

"When you see that more than half of Crist voters are Democrats, that's a big red warning sign," says pollster Brad Coker, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Crist's support, he wrote in an analysis of the poll, could implode like "a proverbial house of cards."

Republicans are solidly behind the former state House speaker Rubio. He has 70 percent of Republicans’ support, compared to 18 percent for Crist and 3 percent for Meek.

Coker says Crist's chances to cut into Rubio's lead among GOP voters "appear bleak," because only 20 percent of Republicans have a favorable opinion of Crist, down 17 percentage points from a month ago.

The conservative Rubio, moderate Crist and liberal Meek are vying for the seat vacated by the retirement of Republican Mel Martinez.

dems are going to come out for crist in a big way.

and if he wins, he'll be one of the frontrunners for the "RINO 2012" slot - you know, the GOP nomination.  FOX weeds out all the true conservatives quickly and lets us choose between 3 "viable" RINOs.

lol.  So he's going to rejoin the Republican Party after this election AND be the frontrunner for the presidential nomination?  Absurd.  Will never happen.  He killed his career within the party by jumping ship, after taking money.

imagine a 2012 run...

he'll carry FL.
he's a good looking guy, squeaky clean and likable.
he's a RINO (and you repubs talk about true conservatism up until primaries when FOX tells you that 3 RINOs are your only viable options).
he has VERY low disapproval ratings from repubs AND dems.
Teachers nationwide will love him, thanks to FL SB6.
He's POSITIVE... in the 2008 primaries, Mccain was the only positive one while mitt, huck and rudy tore each other up... he was the only one with dignity in the end, and won.

Look at Lieberman... he still wields a ton of power in congress, and if mccain hadn't been over-ridden by his staff, liebermann would have been the 2008 VP candidate for the repubs.

I'm right about this one.  Even if he chooses to stay outta the VP race, he's one of the top 3 choices for GOP VP in 2012.  If he chooses to enter the race, it's him against Romney for "Boss Rhino" and unfortunately, Romney has the people skills of a blender.

Crist/Romney 2012.  Wouldn't surprise me in the least.  And, you repubs will sell him like he's the most conservative thing since Ron paul.... LMAO

I disagree.  You have accused him of being a closet homosexual, but now he is "squeaky clean"?  In addition, here are the problems with your theory:

1.  Lieberman has no clout in his party and will never be the Democrat nominee for president, or even the VP nominee.  The fact he could have arguably been the Republican VP choice for McCain only proves how out of favor he was with his own party.  It certainly doesn't help prove that Crist could be the Republican nominee.  Or even the VP choice.

2.  There is no way Crist will earn the trust of loyal party members nationwide, and he cannot win without the support of his own party.  The fact he couldn't beat out a fellow Republican in his own state shows how thin his support is within the party.

3.  He took money as a Republican and has refused to return it after leaving the party.  Sounds dishonest to me.

4.  There is nothing to suggest that teachers will bloc vote in his favor and be enough of a bloc to impact the race, either in Florida or nationwide.

5.  He doesn't have the money to run and win a 50-state campaign.
