Everyone should care about the environment and I believe the vast majority do, even republicans. The idea that a person doesn't care if there's dirty air or polluted water is hard to swallow. But like all things in life there are a trade offs. ANWAR is a place most people will never see and would care even less to go to. It's not easily accessible and is a frozen tundra replete with mosquitoes. The more oil we can produce for ourselves the less dependent we will be on helping finance those that want to kill us.

So I would oppose drilling on Coach's beach but in a god forsaken place like ANWAR. Drill, baby, drill!

To where it all boils down to is personal consumption of resources, and you instantly bring in some, no offence, shitty global politics.

The number of idiots who buy into this political issue, is staggering.
Studies have been done on recycling, showing it uses more resources, than it saves.
But, people are sheep.  You tell them something enough, they'll believe it all.  Isn't that what Hitler did?

I saw a pc on this on FRONTINE. Much of the really bad stuff just get shipped to some obscure place via barge and then burned.
Most of the high tech trash with loads of lead and mercury, etc ends up in some burn pit in some distant asian dump, seriously.
The "recyclers" sell the trash to these burn pit owners in places with little enviro enforcement.

with that said, yes, recycling harms the environment more than it helps it, and it was basically brought out of an early "green" movement which did nothing more than provide for a few jobs for the inner city crackheads, which incidentally cost more than just keeping them on welfare or shooting them.

Aluminum cans are the only things that are worth recycling.  Other forms of recycling burn more energy than they save.

MY brother in law hikes in the High Sierra and always dives in one of those freezing lakes up there if he sees the least bit of trash  ... a bottle cap, a can, anything that nature has not placed their herself.

A couple of years ago we took a very long hike along the Pacific Crest Trail without the necessary permit because of some dumb oversight on our part.

Over those five days he picked up every bit of scrap that he saw. Under lakes and under rocks even a pair of shit stained under-pants in a plastic bag.

I estimated he had about 50 pounds of trash in his additional back pack.

So on our last day out we run into one of the rangers on the trail who wants to see our permit and gives us a ration of shit because we 'ain't' got one.

So then he proceeds to write some sort of ticket thing and I pulled my bro-in-law's back pack off and open it and tell the ranger, "OK, then we're gonna but all this shit back where we found it!"

And that changed his attitude and we were thanked for our concern  and told to have an enjoyable day because the remainder of our route was more beautiful than we had already seen. (We started our trek at Mammouth and came out at Tuolomne Meadows above Yosemite Valley).

During that hike a real live bear stold one of the back packs that I was using as a pillow.

We found it the following morning only to discover that we has stupidly packed a bunch of instant Quaker Oats which the bear had enjoyed for a mid-night treat.

Ditto. I believe educated people will do what is needed to prevent catastrophe, whatever that may be. That said, I do not pollute more than I have to for survival, and I recycle when I can but I don't have the bins because my bullshit red state charges for them. Maybe it is just my county?
