A couple of winters ago, our elderly neighbor friends were gone for several months (by neighbors, I mean 1/2 mile down the road).  We were "watching" the house, which basically means stopping in every few days to fill the bird feeders, water the plants, make sure the furnace is still operating, etc.

During one of our routine visits, it was clear they were "ransacked".  Every drawer opened and overturned, blank checks strewn about...  Apparently they were looking specifically for short arms.  The gun cabinet was undisturbed (filled with lots of rifles), nor was any jewelry or small antiques taken. They were one of about 10 homes hit in a small area in a 5-10 day period.

The "dust" left behind by the cops was REALLY messy.

This is why you own a gun...

my house was broken into twice when I was a kid both times the knew exactly what they were looking for...first time they knew exactly how to disable the alarm system, it was old and didnt call anybody just a loud siren. After the first time my parents had burgler bars installed so the second time it looked like they got a car jack and jacked 2 bars apart and got in that way...

Lesson learned, get a safe that is to heavy to be carried out or that bolts to the ground and keep your valuables in there.

Luckily no, I haven't been burglarized. But I realy feel for people who have. I know here in Canada the laws are so stupid it isn't funny. If someone were to break into my house and I were to break a shovel over his head in self defence, I could get sued. Same deal if a burglar were to fall down in my home. Nice rules, huh?

When I was just a little kid, our home was broken into twice, on Sunday, while we were at church.  After this, my parents built a fence around the property, got two big dogs and put steel bars on all our windows.  No more break ins after that.

An apartment I used to rent got broken into while I was at work.  One of the cops who showed up afterwards happen to go to my church.  He got from the other cop the list of everything that was stolen.  He then took the list to the church without telling me anything.  A week later, the cop and a few people from the church show up with all this stuff.  They had taken the list and gone shopping, replacing most of the stuff that was stolen from me, and giving me cash for the few things that they could not find.

It's normal during a bad economy for break ins to increase.  I suggest putting deadbolts on your doors, alarm system stickers on your windows, and invest in a $300 wireless network camera and a surveillance camera warning sign to put on the front and back of your place.  These are enough to deter most burglars.  They tend to go for the easy, or the easier targets.

Woman watches home invasion on webcam
Fri April 10, 2009

(CNN) -- Jeanne Thomas was sitting at her desk at work when she decided to check the security camera that she installed in her home. The Thomas home had been burglarized before, so she installed a monitoring device where she can watch a live video feed of the camera in her home.

When Thomas decided to pull up the feed of her house Wednesday morning, she couldn't believe what she saw. There was someone inside her home, someone she didn't know. Thomas picked up the phone and called 911.

"I'm watching my home on live monitor, and there is a black man in my house, and he is robbing it," she told the dispatcher. The woman on the other end of the call asked Thomas where she was, and Thomas replied, "I'm in Fort Lauderdale, at my work."

Thomas' home is in Boynton Beach, Florida, more than 20 miles away, yet she was watching over the Internet as two men walked through her home, picking up items. Watch the video from Thomas' home »

Police later arrested Curtis Williams, 20, and Steven Morales, 19.

According to the Boynton Beach Police, Williams and Morales entered the house through a pet door. As the 911 dispatcher was calling police to the scene, Thomas stayed on the line, giving a play-by-play of what she was seeing.

"He's in my house. I am seeing him walk around my house. He's in my bedroom right now," she said. The bedroom cannot be seen in the video, but the door from the living room into the bedroom is visible.

Thomas watched as the men wandered through her home, taking valuables such as her TV and Wii gaming console.

"This is unbelievable," she told the 911 dispatcher. "The cat is freaking out. The dogs are hiding."

One of the burglars took a bag of shredded cheese from the refrigerator and could be seen on the video stuffing it in his mouth. None of them noticed the small camera that resembles an air freshener.

"They walked right up to it and didn't know what it was," Thomas said later.

A few minutes after Thomas called 911, the video shows police officers entering the home.

According to the police report, "Williams and Morales had placed the victim's 37 inch flat screen TV, a safe, gaming machine with several misc. games (total value approx. $3000) on the victim's bed."

Williams and Morales told police that two other people, not seen on video, were also involved in the incident.

All four suspects were arrested and charged with burglary of a dwelling and attempted grand theft.

Thomas' husband thought she was nuts for spending $250 on the webcam system, telling her she would never catch anyone. But to her, it now seems like a smart investment.

Thomas hopes it will be a lesson for burglars.

"You never know who is watching you," she said.

If your next meal was in there I bet you were ready to kill!

Our alarm guy said those stickers are a big deterrent and knows people that put them up even if there is no alarm.

loco, do you have any specific brand of wireless camera you would suggest?

Are these cameras basically the same thing as a nanny-cam?  I've heard of guys putting cameras up by their deer stands too.  Is this the same thing?

I guess it's similar, if not the same thing as a nanny-cam.  But these cameras can be accessed and controlled remotely with a web browser.  They have heat and motion sensors which, when triggered, will send you images to your phone, email or an FTP site if you set it up that way.  So if somebody breaks in and steals or destroys the camera, you still have the images which you can take to the police.  If the camera alerts you right before, or during the burglary, you can immediately call the police so they can catch the burglars in the act.  I think these cameras are pretty cool and useful, and they can be a great deterrent.
