Paying for McDonald's/ Fast Casual In Your City
« on: October 24, 2017, 09:11:03 AM »
I don't go to McDonald's that often, so I didn't notice the following happening gradually. About a year, maybe year and a half ago, I did notice a self-serve kiosk for the first time at a McDonald's on 23rd st here in NYC. At the time, it was optional to use or you could still place an order at the counter. Over the weekend, was out with my family and stopped in a McDonald's on 16th st in Chelsea. At that location, ordering by kiosk was mandatory. I stopped in another location just to see and it was mandatory there, too. From what I observed, the kiosks weren't that much more convenient. It took people forever to order, and some guy had to call one of the girls over from the counter to help him order a coffee drink. It took the girl about 5 minutes to scroll through all of the menus for him to place the order he wanted. Then there was some sort of problem with the machine and he ended up leaving.  :-\

I stopped in a Wendy's about a week ago and I was surprised to see they had self-serve kiosks. It was after midnight and the kiosks were shut down for the night, which was strange because the place was so busy that people were leaving because it was taking so long to place orders.

Are self-serve kiosks already popular in other parts of the country, too?

Another trend in NYC: a lot of places ONLY take payment by credit card now. Some include venmo, too. I've been really surprised to see how popular this has become over the last year or two. A friend of mine who is a partner in a small restaurant says it saves a lot of time and makes it easier to close up at the end of the night.

Self serve at drug stores (duane reade/ cvs/ walgreens) has been an option here in NYC for about 10 years. I almost always opt for the cashier. Almost without exception, there will be some sort of problem with the self-serve machine.

The ones here in Rockland county are optional, and it's a cluster fuck either way.

Like you said, just for coffee.

I'm in nyc too, it's been trending that way for almost a decade way before the increased min wage was a thing.  20 if you count the subway getting rid of token booths for metrocard machines
