Last night the local news did a piece on the ferry system that is used on the outter banks....those not familiar, NC has a chain of islands that can't be reached by car so there is a ferry to get to the islands...around 7 or so, I believe. They carry cars, boats, etc... and only half of them charge for the ferry ride....ok fine, if you are covering your operating costs for ALL the ferries, then don't charge....BUT the state budget just alloted $11 million dollars to subsidize the ferries that don't charge, to keep it free! And they interviewed quite a few people....almost all the users are out of state tourists, who said they would be glad to pay a fee and had fully expected to pay one. I had only used one that charged, one time, and wasn't aware they were offering these "free" ones at taxpayers expense. Just another example of the govment at work.
