Con Demetriou Interview as he preps for the Europa, Dallas

Monday, 02 August 2010 04:18

ABBers: Con, firstly congrats on your success in the pro ranks this year. We'll start with what you make of the year you've had so far?

ConD: Well my best effort was in Orlando where I placed 5th. I didn't do too well in Pheonix but I'm glad I did that show because that's where I met my coach Dennis James, I was about to chuck in the towel and then I bumped into Dennis James the next day in the gym and he asked me when my next show is and I said I think I've had enough and he said "well why don't you do one more show, the Orlando is coming up soon. You're already lean, You've just got to dry out a bit and fill out". So he offered to train me and I filled out and dialed in really well for the Orlando show and I guess I took it to another level.

ABBers: That leads us right into our next question. What changes did Dennis make as far as dieting and training goes?

ConD: What Dennis taught me was very simple it was basically back to the old school stuff. He just had me counting all my calories and making a few adjustments. He also taught me how to control my salt and estrogen levels and to cut down on things that raise the estrogen levels and certain things to take to get the estrogen down and that really made a big difference.

ABBers: Now you competed in the Tampa pro and then the following week at the Hartford Europa and you made some pretty drastic changes in that space of a week.

ConD: Your dead right! I really did.

ABBers: How did you make those changes and how much weight did you drop?

ConD: Well I dropped 10lbs in one week and I knew I had to do that. Everyone told me at the Orlando show that you've got everything, you come in shredded, you've got the shape, you've got the symmetry and they said "if you we're a little bit bigger you'd do some serious damage". So I tried to come in bigger by really carbing up and I over-carbed and spilled over and lost my definition.

When I got to the show the guys there we're huge. There we're guys like Bautista and all those mass monsters and I thought to myself I can't beat these mass monsters so I may as well play it my way and beat them with my definition and symmetry, so that's what I did. I focused on getting that definition and symmetry back, I dropped 10lbs and came in drier and harder but I wasn't in as good condition as I was in the Orlando show and actually looked a bit smaller because I didn't for 10 days so I looked kind of flat.

ABBers: Now you received a lot of positive feedback from guys like Even Centopani, Ron Harris and other industry experts, does this motivate you to go harder for you're next comp or what do you take from that?

ConD: Yeah Definitely! I really want to come in shredded for this comp (2010 Europa Dallas) where I can beat these big guys and getting all these compliments or positive feedback from these big names has really motivated me. What I'm going to do is come in as hard as I can for this show (2010 Europa Dallas) and not worry about my size and then take 6 months off and try and put some serious size on in the offseason and not try and get big and fill out to much at the last minute like I did before. I really need to take some time off competing and put on some serious size.

ABBers: You placed 5th earlier in the year at the Orlando Europa show and you we're beating Mike Kefalianos after Prejudging and we're 4th.

ConD: I actually didn't know that, I only found that out a couple of weeks later and I was stoked because I really hold that guy in high regard.

ABBers: Do you feel you we're better at that show (Orlando Europa 5th) or do you feel like you we're better last week when you placed 10th at the Hartford Europa?

ConD: The best I've ever looked in my life so far was the Orlando show. I looked in the mirror in the hotel room bathroom and my legs we're just so dry and hard it was like I had cling wrap on my muscles like there was no skin there, it was amazing. When I looked in the mirror at the last show I had some definition but nowhere near the condition I had last time.

ABBers: Are you aiming for that kind of condition at the show coming up?

ConD: Yeah, I definitely am. The thing is though I have left it a bit late because I really needed to pig and and fill out for 5 days because at the end of this show I was looking so scrawny because I hadn't trained in so long and I needed to get the fullness back in the muscle before I cut it up because I would look to stringy for this show. I don't know if I'll make it or not but I'll do my dam best to get there and I've got another 11 or 10 days of training left.

ABBers: What's your goal weight if you have one for the show coming up?

ConD: It's funny you say that, I weigh myself every morning and this time I told myself whatever I weigh it doesn't matter, I'm just going to out look. I guess if I'm 230 (230lbs) I'll be happy, I don't think I'll be 235. Just as long as I get that condition I'll be happy.

ABBers: The Europa Show in Dallas is I believe the last or second last chance to qualify for the Olympia so if you we're to qualify for the Olympia what kind of impact do you think that would have on your career?

ConD: If I qualified for the olympia... Well I don't know how to do back flips but I think I'd be doing them on stage haha. Yeah I think it would really give me a good break and I'm battling a bit financially and I'm doing some jobs that I don't like doing just to make ends meet and I really believe if I qualify for the olympia I'll get a sponsor and everything will just come together.

ABBers: Well best of luck with the upcoming contest and we'll be speaking to you soon Con.

ConD: Thanks a lot mate.

I love supporting fellow Aussies and hes slowly been creeping up in the placings and hoping this can be a breakout show for him.

Would love to see him get top 3 and go to the O  ;D
