What about it? It is a reworked X5 and X6 M engine producing 590 to about 600 hp.

Well, I can't answer for Parker, but owned a couple of M cars, all M3's, and a 335i.

IMO, I prefer the NA on the M cars, just something special to hear the sound of revs at 8k rpms, but emissions are getting tougher and gas output on high rev high HP cars are piss poor. 14/20 on current M3's and 11/17 on E60 M5 and M6

Turbo allows the car to produce more HP a long with direct injection and better fuel economy/emissions. As allows BMW to compete more efficiently with Audi and Mercedes.

Even if it's 20% I am sure it's still better than 11/17 on the current model ;D

Yes, I've seen the G power. It's around 800hp, did a top speed of 237??? And is twin screwed supercharged.

Going to miss that V10 for sure, E60 IMO will be a classic cause of that 5.0 NA V10. LOVE the sound!!!

Well the new head of M Division (who was head of Mini), said that TT low rpm engines are the way to the future. Less rpms, less emissions, less weight, increase full economy.

The new M5 was shown with 265 front section tires, so rears might be 295-305s. They may have a KERS device as well and a overboost function. Allegedly it will have active aero slats to block off the front intakes or block off sides on the wheel wells. It is shaping up nicely. But as Ryan said, the naturally aspirated V10 will be missed. Apparently the rpm for the F10 M5 is around 7,100+.

Turboing an M series engine flies in the face of M tradition (at least as far back as I can think).

It is more impressive to see big numbers from a NA car.  The downside is that the power will continue to get stuffed higher and higher up in the rpm range if the engine were to remain NA in the M5.

Maybe I am wrong but I think most "purists" prefer non-turbos.  I find the NA cars more appealing and interesting from an engineering standpoint.

Maybe BMW needs to think about increasing displacement further if they were to keep the car NA.  Unfortunately their R&D dept and marketing people seemed to have decided a couple of years ago that turbos would become more prevalent on BMWs across all model ranges.  I suppose it was inevitable that turbo M cars would soon follow.

apparently the head of BMW M, Kay Segler, who was formerly of Mini, has decreed that Turbos will reign supreme.  And the upcoming 1M Coupe which is based on the N55 turbo engine (known as the S55), is helping to lead the way. The next F30 M3 will have the same Turbo'd i6 engin, and the next 1M will have turbocharged 4 cylinder engine.

Unfortunately it seems that M has to change with the ties, but also Motorsports and Marketing, seem to be what M stands for...
