I love when private companies do what government can’t
October 4, 2010 at 8:00pm by Stu Burguiere

The New York Times tells the story of a private for-profit company named L.S.S.I. that takes over public libraries mainly from struggling cities, removes the cost from the city, improves them, and then gives some cash back to the communities.  Of course, everyone immediately complains about it.

Some L.S.S.I. customers have ended their contracts, while in other places, opposition has faded with time. In Redding, Calif., Jim Ceragioli, a board member of the Friends of Shasta County Library, said he initially counted himself among the skeptics.

But he has since changed his mind. “I can’t think of anything that’s been lost,” Mr. Ceragioli said.

The library in Redding has expanded its services and hours. And the volunteers are still showing up — even if their assistance is now aiding a private company. “We volunteer more than ever now,” Mr. Ceragioli said.

Don’t you hate it when you get expanded services and hours???  One guess on who is opposing the privitization:

Frank Ferry, a Santa Clarita councilman, dismisses the criticism as the work of the Service Employees International Union, which has 87 members in the libraries. The union has been distributing red shirts defending the status quo. “Union members out in red shirts in defense of union jobs,” Mr. Ferry said.

Surprise, surprise.  I just love the ballsyness of it all.  Privatizing public libraries.  I like it as much as the idea of privatizing public parks.

The private sector:  doing jobs government just can’t do.

Do you like it just as much when the government does things (assuming they are productive) private companies can't or won't?

The government has no ability to turn a profit, much less salvage any company or industry. Look at the USPS, one of the largest industries in the country if not the largest...pathetic.

Do you honestly believe the challenges within the USPS are due more to the fact that it's government run,
as opposed to modern technology making the bulk of it's services obsolete? Let's get real here.

Up here in Canada, the postal service is no longer a Crown corporation. It has been privatized for years,
...it's in decline as much as any other postal service in the modern developed world.

Email, the internet, couriers etc have all negatively impacted postal services.

Yes, I honestly believe that. To start, even before massive communication advances, the USPS has been in the red. It's also still one of the largest employers in the U.S., maybe the largest, I'm not sure...I know it was a few yrs ago...and when the number one employer in the entire country is finishing in the deep, deep red every single yr, that's a problem and someone needs to take responsibility for it.

"If it be asked, What is the most sacred duty and the greatest source of our security in a Republic? The answer would be, An inviolable respect for the Constitution and Laws — the first growing out of the last... A sacred respect for the constitutional law is the vital principle, the sustaining energy of a free government."
