“Muslims must accept that German culture is based on Christian and Jewish values,” says Merkel

ABC NEWS Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Wednesday Muslims must obey the constitution and not sharia law if they want to live in Germany, which is debating the integration of its 4 million-strong Muslim population.

In the furor following a German central banker’s blunt comments about Muslims failing to integrate, moderate leaders including President Christian Wulff have urged Germans to accept that “Islam also belongs in Germany.” (No it doesn’t)

The debate comes against a backdrop of U.S. and British concerns over the threat of terrorist attacks by militant Islamists living in Germany, with Berlin toning down such fears.

Merkel faces corresponding discussions inside her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) about whether she is conservative enough, and the center-right leader’s latest comments seemed directed at those who think Wulff went too far in appeasing the Muslims.

Wulff, who has a largely ceremonial role, used a speech on Sunday celebrating two decades of German reunification to urge harmonious integration of immigrants who until a decade ago were considered “guest workers” who would eventually return home.

But whereas the media stressed Wulff’s comments about Islam, Merkel — the daughter of a Protestant pastor brought up in East Germany, who leads a predominantly Catholic party — said Wulff had emphasized

Germany’s “Christian roots and its Jewish roots.”

German Christian Democrats often cite shared Judeo-Christian values rooted in the early history of Christianity because of sensitivities about the Holocaust, when the Nazis murdered six million Jews during World War Two.

“Now we obviously also have Muslims in Germany. But it’s important in regard to Islam that the values represented by Islam must correspond with our constitution,” said Merkel.

“What applies here is the constitution, not sharia.”

Merkel said Germany needed imams “educated in Germany and who have their social roots here” and concluded: “Our culture is based on Christian and Jewish values and has been for hundreds of years, not to say thousands.”

Opinion polls suggest many Germans sympathize with the views of an outspoken member of Germany’s Bundesbank who, in speeches and a book, accused Muslims of sponging off welfare, refusing to integrate and achieving poor levels of education.

Well, well. The rumblings of the encroachment of Sharia on the German way of life seem to be ever-growing. People like Merkel and Geert Wilders seem to be among the few European politicians who echo the growing sentiments of Europeans. Is it still racist to acknowledge that Muslims seem to be incapable of assimilating into Western society and that Sharia Law (and their adherence to it) is the reason why?

Can't say I blame Germany though, what with it being revealed that upwards of 100 German nationals are, or have been, training in terrorist camps in Pakistan.

Good for Merkel, as with any country you wish to immigrate to you become a German or whatever nationality. The fucking Muslims don't get some special treatment because they don't feel like they should have to integrate into the culture of their new home land. Tuff shit, don't like go back to the shit hole they came from.

This is a good sign.

If you mean things like healthcare or whatever, I am actually a fan of better healthcare.

If you start looking at taking away the tenets of the Bill of Rights, then I have an issue with it.

Obviously the constitution is flexible, we have presidential term limits and what not... but if you try to change anything in the Bill of Rights, I have a huge problem there.

As far as "law" is concerned... This is the one I care about.

In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district where in the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defense.

Along with how it relates to this:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Sharia law is religion... simple... you can't use it's laws in our court system.

If someone wants to change that, fuck them and let's have a revolution over it.

The German Muslims have been in a tiff since one of the members of the Bundesbank said that Muslims aren't assimilating into German culture (truth) and because Merkel attended a ceremony honoring freedom of speech for the Mohammed cartoonist. That coupled with the growing number of Germans (both white and non-white) going to Pakistan to train/fight seems to be pissing the assimilated populace of that country off. Can't say I blame them. Then again, they opened their doors to millions of Muslim immigrants and they're now reaping what they sowed.

Erdogan urges German Turks not to integrate

The Turkish government has reportedly angered Turkish-German politicians by inviting them to an Istanbul conference and then urging them to resist political and social integration in their adopted homeland.

At the meeting last month, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged Turks living in foreign countries to take out citizenship of the new homelands – not to integrate, but rather to become more politically active, according to the website of news magazine Der Spiegel.

Ali Ertan Toprak, deputy chairman of the Alevi community in Germany, told the magazine government representatives had said: “We have to inject European culture with Turkish.”

Erdogan told the meeting countries that did not allow dual citizenship violated basic rights and also likened Islamophobia to anti-Semitism.

Participants told Spiegel that Erdogan repeated elements of his widely criticised speech in Cologne in 2008 in which he said: “Assimilation is a crime against humanity.”

The invitation to politicians and religious leaders of Turkish descent included lunch in a five-star hotel in Istanbul and offered to cover their travel costs.

The title of the meeting was: “Wherever one of our countrymen is, we are there too.”

About 1,500 Turks from several European countries attended, including a Belgian MP and representatives of companies and NGOs.

The meeting was organised by Erdogan’s reigning Justice and Development Party (AKP), which has conservative-religious leanings and has been criticised for pulling the country away from its secular tradition.

Faruk Celik, a minister in Erdogan's cabinet, described German politicians as “my honourable parliamentarians” and described Erdogan as “our Prime Minister.”

German politicians and religious representatives of Turkish descent were shocked by the brazen political lobbying and were sharply critical of Ankara.

“It was an absolutely clear lobbying event by the Turkish government,” said Ali Ertan Toprak. He said he was appalled by how often the Turkish government had said Turkish-Germans should represent the interests of Turkey.

“If opponents of (Turkey’s) EU entry from the (European) Union had been there, they would have got a whole lot of material for their argument,” Toprak said.

Canan Bayram, a Turkish-born Greens member of the Berlin city parliament, said she had travelled to the conference as the integration spokeswoman for her party but had insisted on paying for herself.

“It was important for me to make clear that as a German MP I was not financed by the Turkish government,” she said.

Former Social Democrats member of the European parliament and businessman Vural Öger said: “The Turkish government should worry about the interests of Turks in Turkey rather than trying to use Germans of Turkish descent as their messengers.”
