What about pulses and chickpeas? Are they good substitutes to rice or pasta?

i love beans.  Chickpeas are great.  I'm from a spanish background so we eat thses alot.  We make a "soup" with chickpeas, spinach and hard boiled eggs.  Tastey, filling and healthy.  Ironically it's considered peasent food.
