So Does This Mean Fedor Is Back At Number 1 Rank?
« on: October 24, 2010, 01:08:40 AM »
I mean, when Fedor lost to Werdum he went down to third behind Werdum and Brock at 1. Now, since Brock lost and since Werdum himself says that Fedor is the best in the World despite the loss does this mean that Fedor is number 1 again? Or will MMA Weekly and Sherdog say that Velasquez is better than Fedor?

Yeah, they are.  Ranking anyone other than Fedor as #1 HW in the world is ridiculous.

I think Fedor is better than Velasquez-- but until Fedor fights again, you have to give it to Velasquez- its only fair. That said, until Fedor beats Overeem, in my opinion the rankings should be- Velasquez then JDS then Overeem then Fedor. Winner of Velasquez and JDS is #1, winner of Overeem and Fedor is #2. Then we should have a superfight between the winner of both for number 1.

Here are the three reasons why I believe Fedor should still be ranked as number 1:

  1. He only has 1 loss out of 33 professional fights, which is a much better record than anyone else's.

  2. He dominated the best heavyweight division in the World for three years. Until an UFC heavyweight fighter dominates the UFC heavyweight division for at least a couple of years, it is absurd to place him above Fedor.

 3. The only guy to ever beat him claims that his loss is more the result of Fedor's impatience than his skills and that otherwise Fedor would have beaten him and that Fedor is the greatest MMA fighter of all times.

All true. But at the same time, Fedor has to fight more often bro. And nobody is a bigger Fedor fan than I am. It's been almost 1 year and he's had 2 fights and went 1-1. Until he fights the best in SF (Overeem) or beats Werdum in a rematch, I can't put him at number 1. He also needs to fight more often. Fedor can't maintain number one status based on what he did 5 years ago anymore. He is still the greatest fighter of all time. But to be ranked number one in his division, he has to fight the guys in his division.

No question there. I just think it is stupid to put guys with a total of 8 fights with one loss against mediocre opposition above a guy who even GSP claims is the best ever. Can Velasquez really be ranked above Fedor for beating a fighter who was 5-1 and who practically lost the fight before the one with Cain? But Cain did win his last fight and Fedor lost, so it is reasonable to place him above Fedor even though I think it is silly.

Personally, I think Fedor vs Cain would be awesome. I think Fedor would avoid the takedown and KO Cain. We would actually see the very closest thing to a boxing match in MMA.

As for Fedor vs Overeem, this is the fight I want to see. I don't care that Fedor got caught in a submission due to a mistake caused by impatience: to me, he remains just as good as he was before losing to Werdum, and I think a fight between the two would be a strong candidate for GOAT fight. I have no idea what would happen in this fight, but I would really love hearing your opinion.

Fedor and Overeem would have both picked Lesnar apart and took his head off with his C level striking.

Fedor v. Overeem I would have to pick Fedor. Overeem's come straight ahead, agressive style is tailor made for Fedor. Overeem is a well rounded fighter in all areas just like Fedor, but he doesn't have Fedors chin or power. Both are top 5 HW's, and I would love to see the fight either way. Hopefully by early next year we will.

I can agree with that logic.  Too bad we'll never see Fedor fight ANY of these guys ::)

1.  MOST of Fedor's wins are against no name fighters with horrible records.  His record doens't mean shot.

2. Fedor fought the best heavyweights from 10 years ago.  He hasn't fought the top guys of today.

3. Who gives a shit what Werdume says.  He beat Fedor...end of story.

That is too bad. But the one who seems to care the least is Fedor himself.

Funny how ufc posterboys always talk about ''fighting the best''.

''The best of the best'' got brutalized past saturday. Exposed for nothing more than he is; a bob sapp with some extra training dollars.

Many heavyweights could have just raped that belt of his overhyped waist. One can only imagine what guys like Overeem, Fedor and Barnett could do against Lesnar.

Fedor has never left #1 status.

thats just Ufc indoctrination.

George, do you really think Fedor would try to exchange with Overeem? I think Fedor is the hardest puncher in MMA history, but he is not as technical in striking - especially with the legs and knees - as Overeem nor does he have Overeem's reach. If he tries to exchange with Overeem he might get KOd. But yep, if Fedor connects Overeem is down an out. Not even Shane Carwin hits as hard as Fedor. I just don't think Fedor would risk it. He would do a takedown and then submit Overeem. Fedor is the best grappler in MMA besides Werdum, and since Werdum finished of Overeem I think Fedor could do it too.

Who cares? It doesen't matter that he fought lots of cans. He still fought more top heavyweights than any of the current UFC heavyweights have. He beat Nogueira twice, Mirko "Crocop" Filopovic, Heath Herring, Mark Hunt, Renato "Babalu" Sobral, Ricardo Arona, Kevin "The Monster" Randleman, etc. All of these guys were ranked as top heavyweights(except for Renato Sobral who was a light heavyweight) and are true MMA legends. Who in the UFC comes even close to this stat?

2. Fedor fought the best heavyweights from 10 years ago.  He hasn't fought the top guys of today.

Yes, but think about: Who are the top heavyweight today? A guy who beat a former WWE clown with a 5-1 record who should have actually lost the title in his previous fight? The WWE clown himself? A guy who only has standup and very little more and gets gassed in any fight that lasts for more than two minutes? A guy who's claim to fame is beating a way past his prime Nogueira who was injured and fighting at 40% capacity? Who are these great UFC heavyweights you keep talking about? The only heavyweights in the UFC with proven records are Randy and Minotauro and they are both way past their primes. The UFC sucks. The only heavyweights with proven records are: Nogueiira, Fedor, Randy, Overeem and Barnett. C'est fini!

3. Who gives a shit what Werdume says.  He beat Fedor...end of story.

I am not denying that Werdum won. But here is the thing: you know you are the best ever when the only guy to ever beat you says that and that the only reason why he won is because he sat a trap and you fell for it and otherwise you would have won. Werdum was on T.V here in Brazil and he said that Fedor is flat out better than him as an MMA fighter and that he is only better as a grappler. He also said that Fedor has the best grappling he's ever seen in an MMA fighter. According to him, 99% of BJJ black belts would not have been able to escape his first submission attempt but Fedor did escape. Then Fedor pressed his luch and got caught the second time. Anyone can get caught in a grappling match against a fifth degree BJJ black belt who is a World champion. Anyone. It doesen't mean shit. So Werdum is better at BJJ than Fedor? We already knew that. This fight didn't change anything.
