When I was there in 2001 you had to buy a special ticket to go inside.  They only let so many people in per day because it raises the humidity in there which eats away at the stones and markings inside.

To simply it. They have found water erosions on the Sphinx. Hundres of geologist have also came to the same conclusion.
For that to have happened due to the LACK of rain in egypt, it has to date back to around (if I remember correctly) around 5-7000 years ago.

And for a hundred of years in every school in eveyr country we have been told egyptions built it around 1000 BC or something in that manner.
