Is Tea better for you than Coffee?
« on: October 28, 2010, 07:21:05 AM »
Is Green Tea healthier than Black, White etc?

What would be a good Breakfast Tea and what would be a good evening Tea?  I saw something called Sleepy Time but it has Spearmint in it which sounds gross for Tea.

Thanks

White tea is the healthiest , then green , then black

Black is fermented with the highest level of caffeine , green is picked green  mid range caffeine , and white is flower/ blossom stage and has the lowest level of caffeine.. white tea isn't steeped with boiling hot water .. it's just under the boil point that is best for white

White is lighter and a little sweet  .. IMO

I love sleepytime tea .. and orange spice is delish too

They all have different benefits. Coffee is loaded with antioxidants and so is tea. Coffee unfortunately has lactols and lactones that increase Calcium excretion. Caffeine itself increases Calcium excretion. Coffee may also aggravate peptic ulcers if you have them. High roast destroys most of the antioxidants in coffee, so opt for medium and light roast. Black, green and white tea all come from the same plant, Camelia Sinensis. Black tea is fermented and whilst that increases the bioavailability of it's caffeine, it destroys the largest part of it's antioxidants(it's catechins and polyphenols especially epilogallactin gallate). Green tea is made from the unfermented leaves so it has more antioxidants. White tea is made from the buds and has even more antioxidants. My recommendation is for you to drink light roast coffee and white tea. They provide the highest health benefits. But if you're looking for caffeine, then white tea will give you very little.

I don't think it's strong .. but yes I can taste it ... nothing like spearmint chewing gum level .. it's milder with the lemongrass and chamomile added in .. it's a nice flavor .. I add a little Limoncello to add to the sleepy effect .. like a hot toddy  :)
