In the post-war years, Federal spending as a % of GDP has been about 20%.  Under the current POTUS, it's up to 25%.  In the EU, it's about 47%, so Democrats see lots of room for "growth" here in the US.

Defense is 4% of GDP here, but I think it's closer to 5% now:

I don't think GDP means what you think it means.  Gross Domestic Product is the total size of a country's economy output.  Currently for the US it's about $15 trillion

which shows military spending as around 4% of GDP

how much of the federal budget the US spends on defense depends on whether you also count the budgets for the CIA, NSA, DHS, the nuclear weapons part of the Dept of Energy, the Veterans Administration, etc.  That total is much much more than the budget of just the defense department.
