what is the difference between gorilla muscle fibers and human? What is the source of their strength on a herbivore diet?
There is no difference between their muscle fibers. The contratile capacity of muscle sarcomers in terms of force does not vary between species. The reasons why gorillas are stronger than Humans are three fold:
1. Gorillas have much larger absolute muscle mass than Humans.
2. Most of their muscle mass is in the torso compared to Humans, who have most of their muscle mass in the quadriceps and gluteus muscles.
3. Their muscles attack to the bones in positions that give them far superior leverage, especially for pulling. Humans have a muscular structure organized for fine dexterity, whilst gorillas have a muscular structure organized for maximizing leverage for pulling. This is why we have much lower strength in our torsos, but we have superior dexterity. A gorilla cannot touch the center of his palm with him thumb but we can.
