is jordan overrated?
« on: October 22, 2010, 10:47:07 AM »
i've been thinking lately, did he just play in a weak era when the lakers and celtics of the 80's got old?

look at the teams he beat in the finals, i really don't think any of those teams would beat the lakers, spurs, and celtics of the last 10 years

So are you asking if his winning 6 titles is overrated because of the competition he faced? Or are you suggesting his sheer talent was overrated? Or is his legacy as the greatest basketball player of all time overrated?

For my money...Jordan's the best of all time. He faced some pretty good teams en route to winning the title. The Jazz for instance, would have been very tough against the Celtics and Spurs(who they beat in '98 on the way to the finals--Spurs won the title the next season.) The Jazz would have matched up well with any of those teams.

The Blazers of '92 or Suns of '03 could play with any of those teams from the last 10 years. The quality of basketball was so much better and touger, defensively. No hand check rule and lot more contact. Jordan still averaged 30+ per game.

With today's defenses...a prime Jordan would average 40 in his sleep.

I think its like football players of yesteryear and those of today...yea they were great players no doubt but the avg player today is bigger stronger and faster than those of 10-20 yrs ago...

He did more for the sport of basketball than any other player in the history of the game but I dont think he would be as special today as he was in his time simply b/c the level of play has come up.

I was a HUGE Jordan fan at UNC, but the media turned me against him in the NBA.....I was a Bird/Celtics fan during that time, and even with them and the Lakers winning everything, all the NBA wanted to hype was Jordan.  One team that Jordan beat that I consider a great all-time team was the Pistons.

All that said, Jordan is the greatest player of all time.  He would dominate in any era, including today.  No question.  Look at how dominate Kobe is and Jordan is a much, much more complete player than Kobe.

i think he's the best player ever, but the "god" status is a bit overblown

like i said i don't think any of the teams he faced in the 90's were as good as the teams over the past 10 years, no way malone and stockton getting by prime shaq and kobe

i think the rockets were the best team he could've faced but that was when he played baseball

Oh, I agree with the "god" thing being overdone.  It's even arguable from a statistical standpoint that he wasn't the greatest ever.  Oscar avged a triple double and one season, after being told he couldn't do it, Wilt led the league in assists!  Can you imagine ANY center, or forward for that matter in the last 20 yrs doing that?

The one thing that probably separates MJ from Kobe, Lebron, Wade, etc.... was his incredible will to win and ability to come thru in the clutch.  Noone is better....not even close.....and so we remember those things more than the futile years when the Celts were crushing the Bulls, even with MJ putting up 60.

I don't think he's overrated.  Not the greatest player in NBA history IMO, but definitely one of the greatest.  He did play in a weak era and never won without Pippin.  Still one of the greatest ever though.
